I just asked Claude about the possibility to upload Quickens codebase and data structure into an AI platform and modernize it. The possibilities are real and exciting. Will the team do it? Will the team modernize Quicken in a way that allows users to preserve their data, maybe migrate the data stores to a modern data structure as well? Something that initially looks and feels the same, but works better/faster etc. and allows for ongoing modernization at an AI-enabled pace of change? There is STILL nothing out there that can offer what quicken offers, but quicken nonetheless suffers/loses b/c of its interface, age, etc. Claude Code w/ Cursor can dramatically accelerate modernization and do it right by users and by developers—make it look and feel the same at the start, but on a modern platform, build with/buy AI from the ground up, with transparency and all the best practices, such that future features can be created and integrated with similar speed and precision. And, as a major input, Quicken make use of one of its biggest underutilized assets: this user community. it’s full of power user input, beginner’s questions, and edge cases. Claud could read it all and integrate it into a set of priorities and a plan, and then help execute it. Will you do it? I’m so excited, I’d put money into it. Quicken could raise money on this idea, and fund it accordingly. Will the team do it?

For years I used the Class feature in Quicken 2004. This allowed me to keep track of my budgeted categories by showing a balance in each of the defined Classes and sub-Classes. The Class feature allowed for both income and expenses to be itemized in each Class and showed a balance for each Class (unlike the use of Categories). I would very much like to do the same thing in the new Quicken Classic subscription but have been unable. I have tried using Tags in a similar manner but have not been successful.

Is there a way to replicate the Class feature in this manner in the current version?

Thanks

Just a quick note of gratitude to the developers and employees at Quicken for making this such a terrific product over the years. I have been a Quicken users from its very first release on DOS back in the early 80's. I have depended upon it ever since for all of my finances: that is decades of use from one software application. I don't think I can say that about any other productivity tool I have used.

And I want to mention that I have most definitely noticed a shift recently in the development of the software (I am on the Windows Quicken Classic Deluxe for desktop version (R65.29 (27.1.65.29)) for the better: more frequent updates to the product, faster bug fixes, better features. THANK YOU for not abandoning this truly useful and honestly irreplaceable piece of software. I am happy to support it!

Happy December, and with it we bring you some—✨ Holiday Nostalgia Icebreaker ✨

Every year, the holidays bring out memories I didn’t even realize were still tucked away in my brain. Especially when it comes to decorations. Growing up, our Christmas tree always had tinsel—not the classy, evenly placed kind, but the “grab a handful and toss it at the tree” method. We also had those old-school multicolored lights and the infamous bubble lights that fascinated me as a kid. I remember staring at them like they were tiny lava lamps. Now, as an adult—I’m convinced they are one of the most questionable décor choices ever made… but I still smile when I think about them.

Here's a photo of the bubble lights, courtesy of Google:

Is there any way to get a Venmo Transaction for a specific amount tied to a memorized payee after I download my transactions from my bank?

As it is, all the download from my bank gives me is "Venmo" as the payee along with the amount.
Deposit ACH VENMO/TYPE: CASHOUT ID: XXXXXXXXXXX CO: VENMO
Withdrawal ACH VENMO/TYPE: PAYMENT ID: XXXXXXXXXX CO: VENMO NAME:

The transaction CASHOUT or PAYMENT ID is tied to my account and is the same each time, of course.
For example, I would like for Quicken to change the payee to "Sally Smith" for $600 CASHOUT and "Suzy Taylor" for $25 CASHOUT, and "Nancy Jones" for $150 PAYMENT and "Tom Thomas" for $200 PAYMENT.

Thanks,

Someone may have already brought up this suggestion, but thought I would give it a shot today. Don't know exactly how Santa Quicken could 'pick a winner'? Maybe a drawing of all Quicken users of say, 1 year or more? Or maybe, which Quicken user gives the most intelligent answers to forum questions, or least intelligent answers? (I stand better chance on that one} 😎🤣 What 'cha think out there, especially in Quicken Management Land??

I have discovered that now that I'm older my investment, debt and asset records are of more interest than my detailed spending data from 1986, and with this my data organization needs have changed.

I currently have annual files from 1986 through 2015 ( current 10 years ). A number of years ago I did discover that I wanted my entire investment history in my current file, and over time have managed to fairly well accomplish that goal. However, I now have the individual annual files with much duplicated data carried forward. And this has probably resulted in varying data due to adjustments and corrections. Plus this results in much duplicated data volume in annual files for all accounts that are carried forward, i.e. debt, asset, investment.

What I wish is that I had instead accumulated my spending data in one file and my net worth (debt, asset and investment) data in another file.

I have earlier expressed my unpopular feelings regarding file size and performance issues, as a result of having been a programmer and database designer/administrator for 42 years. My solution has been to design and develop my own system of exporting my Quicken data, then formatting and merging it and importing it to a relational database system (Microsoft SQL Server). That has facilitated the ability to manipulate my data far more effectively.

What I would wish now to have is a single storage system for the spending data and a single storage system for the investment/asset/investment history.

Another thing I had done that will undoubtedly also be unpopular is to suggest to our federal representatives that they enact legislation that would require software development companies to give us complete and unfettered access to OUR data and any related analytical data that is stored in THEIR systems. This would be accomplished via requiring that OUR data be available in usable format directly by independent existing database systems and programming languages independent of any specific vendor software.

Through my career I used and developed systems based on various database systems and various programming languages and we NEVER captured, developed, and stored data that was not accessible to other systems.

Both are good, but Pecan pie tends to be richer, which makes it feel more satisfying.

I'd love to hear which you prefer!

The check writing icon next to the checking account which informs you about what checks you have to print blocks the red flag which indicates how many transactions you have to download. I don't want to use the check writing feature, but I can't find a way to change or delete it.

Hello Everybody and welcome to the beautiful month of June (IMO the best month as my birthday is tomorrow! ☺️)

Anywho, this month I thought we could discuss the best place that we have ever traveled to as well as a place that we would like to visit! For me, I would have to say that going to the Bahamas would have to be the best place that I have traveled to, the water was beautiful, it was warm, and the culture was fascinating! As far as a bucket list travel destination, I would have to say Italy. My great grandmother was born and raised in Sicily before moving to the United States. I would love to meet more of my family and learn more about my culture!

I can't wait to hear all of yours!

Please forgive me if I mess up the dates below somewhat. I'm old and the stuff I am talking about happened a very long time ago. 😉 If there is a better place to post this, please let me know.

I began using Quicken DOS, I believe, in the late 1980s. I was also very involved in CompuServe, one of the first online messaging boards. I had found some email addresses for some of Intuit's executives and began harassing them to put their support online and specifically on CompuServe. I guess they got tired of my emails so when they did decide to go on CompuServe they asked me to be their Forum Leader (basically the top volunteer on the forum). I did that for quite a few years, as I recall.

On July 22, 1994 USA Today published an article about Quicken on the front page of their Money section. Along with the article was a photo of a computer screen with Quicken on it, surrounded by me and my family. And now we finally get to the purpose of this too long post.

I have a paper copy of that day's paper, but I would really like to find an online version. So far I've been unable to find it, either here or on USA Today's website. Does anyone know of someone I could contact to see if an electronic version of this article exists? I'd appreciate any suggestions or help you can provide.

TIA.

Harry Dreier

Welcome to September! Just as every month before, we like to spark conversations outside of the day-to-day Quicken-talk. For this month, we ask:

What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?

For me, it was back in 2018 when my family and I traveled to Belgium to visit my family. My husband was struggling with jet lag and explaining it to my brother (who speaks English, but not fluently). What my brother meant to say was “if you’re tired in the morning, don’t snooze the alarm—just get up right away.” But because he was translating things literally from Dutch (Flemish) to English, he said, “You just need to stand up.”

So my husband replied, “Yeah, you’re right, I just need to stand up,” and physically stood up out of his chair. They both kept nodding and agreeing with each other, not realizing they were having two completely different conversations. I was cracking up watching them. 😅

Now I want to hear from you—What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve been part of (or witnessed)?

Itsdeductible is a very valuable tool when handling donations of items. This should not go away as the US for 2026 will have a new process to allow for non-itemized users to declare donations. Do not do away with it!

On hot days, a cool treat can feel pretty good. Since a lot of frozen treats are a bit too cold for my liking (and also tend to be high calorie), my favorite cool treat is a Honeycrisp apple that's been in the 'fridge overnight. It's sweet, and being chilled in the 'fridge makes it a nice, refreshingly cool treat.

What kind of cool treats do you enjoy?

Not so much.

Let’s make this interesting: What’s the most non-summer thing about you right now?

Are you wearing all black in 100 degrees?
Reading horror novels while everyone’s posting vacation pics?
Still pretending it's October? 🎃

I’ll go first: I’m drinking hot coffee, wearing Doc Martens, and avoiding sunlight like it owes me money. 😂

Your turn!
