Agreed...Quicken should NEVER be changing user entered data unless initiated or authorized by the user. Changing the first line of a split that is already entered violates that simply rule.

Agreed. This is such a bad design that I cannot fathom what they were thinking.

I have to save, then re-open the transaction and delete the last line to get a correct left over balance.

Editing the same thing twice to get the desired result is insane.

I just entered a split transaction on my iPhone. Now I can see why they did it this way.  Nice entering a split, not nice changing a split.

I don't use my phone for this so I cannot comment on that. But on the Mac, both adding and changing a split is asinine.

Yes, yes, yes! I can't describe how much I LOATHE the way splits work. DO NOT change an amount I previously entered, what would ever make that a good idea? As someone who enters splits on a regular basis this is by far the biggest frustration I encounter with Quicken 2017.

And yet they keep tweaking it without fully listening to the comments from users. I don't know if you've updated to version 4.5.4 yet or not; in this latest version, they again changed the behavior of splits to try to deal with some of the complaints. From the release notes:
    • We got a lot of complaints about splits getting into a mode where it would change the first split line even after you’ve edited it which was clearly frustrating. There are 3 split modes: Total, Refine First Line and Remainder. If the transaction total amount is 0, then Quicken will sum the amount of the splits and update the total. The Refine First Line mode is useful when one basically wants to categorize a few items but the bulk of a purchase is the same. For example, if you typically go to Walmart for groceries but occasionally buy clothes or something else you may want to pull out just those non-standard items and categorize them separately. In this case, you want the first split line to be Groceries and its amount should decrease with each split line added. Quicken goes into this mode if the transaction total is > 0, the first split line is not edited and there are initially only 2 split lines meaning this is a new split. All other times, splits are in remainder mode where a remainder split line is automatically created if the total amount isn't reached.
    • We added a new feature to adjust the transaction total to the sum of the current split values. If you increase the amount of an existing split line, a remainder split is created that basically subtracts the amount you just added which can be frustrating. This might happen if you decide to increase the amount of extra principal you pay for a month or adjust a paycheck split transaction to match actual amounts. In this case, most would want the total amount to adjust. We've added a "minus" button to the remainder split line so you can delete it. This will automatically change the transaction total value.
I've worked with it some, and it's somewhat better -- but I still think they continue to WAY overthink this issue and make it far more complex than it needs to be. "Three split modes" which aren't visible or apparent to users just doesn't seem like good user interface design to me. It would be so much simpler if splits always worked the same way -- always created a remainder line -- and had a button a user could click when they want to remove the remainder line and adjust the total instead.

I agree. The 2007 worked fine.

Exactly...simple, straight-forward, predictable, and obvious (though it does have a bug...it worked better in QM2002, the version I used before going to QM2007).

Please add this function:  Entering a amount and then deciding to split (to add another deposited check)--triggers one of the latter two modes--Refine First Line or Remainder.  And I don't see a way to escape it, which is the irritant.

THEREFORE--please let me, in the QK preferences, not by the entry of an amount, specific that I always want "Total"--no other split behavior.

Speaking of not repeating posts... this repeats what I wrote just three posts higher in this thread. ;)    (And the end of my post states the changes I think should be made.)
