Add Option to Have Debits/Credits Tallied Separately - Reconciliation Quicken Mac (58 Legacy Votes)

smayer97
smayer97 SuperUser, Mac Beta, Canada Beta ✭✭✭✭✭
In QM2007, the reconciliation process tallies cleared charges/debits and payments/credits separately. Many (if not most) FI/Banks provide those numbers separately. Being able to compare these numbers makes it far easier to track down discrepancies.

Also, QM2007 not only tallies these separately, it also lists them separately. Again, this makes it possible to track down discrepancies far easier than having them all listed in one list.

At the very least, QMac should add these 2 separate cleared balances (charges/debits vs payments/credits).

Ideally, it should provide the option to provide a 2-column view that lists the charges/debits and payments/credits separately (see QM2007 example above).

Be sure to click the little grey triangle under the VOTE count in the blue banner below, so your vote will count (it may take a moment for your vote to register).

    @smayer97,
I don't see Quicken redesigning the view or placement of data in the reconciliation screen because it's an overlay of the register for which they sort by date unreconciled items to view and reconcile.  This is the trend as much as I don't like it either, this makes it easier for the programmers.

Not hard to implement optional second view, that pops up based on preference set OR by a button to switch views. Therefore cannot hurt to ask.

If enough people request it, that could change. Trends can be made to change. So let's not discourage anyone from asking. Especially since the benefit is significant, making the process more accurate, faster, and easier to identify discrepancies.

Holding back a vote only counts one out, so no opportunity to change anything. Adding a vote provides an opportunity to influence change for something very useful.

This is only a request for the option to choose, not replace the existing presentation.

But with the current presentation, it takes more time to track down a discrepancy. Since most statements (if not all) provide a subtotal for debits separate from a subtotal for debits, showing that total + showing a list separating them cuts down the time significantly, especially when there are a lot of transactions in a period.

Again, only proposing an option to choose.

For what it's worth, I like the current setup, and I was used to the old separate setup from QM2007.

I understand what your talking about that is how my "bank statement" is laid out which I reconcile to; Deposits including any interest rec'd in one section and  POS, APP, Bankcard, Withdrawals, Transfers, Online Bill pay,  transactions and bank fees in another and physical checks in another.  Some banks do not have this format though.

On the other hand my account activity "online" is all mixed together in order of date of transaction like Quicken is now.  So those using an automated reconciliation based on a download from their banks may find that format will not work if reconciled that way.

The above option would be more convenient, but doubtful anything will change to allow for multiple platforms but you can try.

So the above has been partially implement as of QM2016 v3.5.2.

The more I think about this, there is an alternative that would also satisfy this need. Since QM2016 v3.5.2 added:

    • NEW: Added payment and deposit columns in the Reconcile register.

    • NEW: Added payment and deposit totals in the reconcile screen.
simply being able to sort the reconciliation screen by Payment or Deposit columns would work, as long as such a sort also keeps the transactions in data order within that sort.

That already exists in mine!  Also, the two columns are separated by the "clr" column so it's easy to distinguish deposits from payments but they are in date order as it would be if you when online to your bank and looked up your activity there.  It just isn't going to appear in the same format as QM2007 like you want.

Yes, the Payment and Deposit columns are there, as stated above.

The format is less important. What is important is the functionality to see data in useful ways. Since the v3.5.2 release, it is now very close to optimal (I did not look at that version prior to posting this request).

Can you sort by any column? If not, what is not there is sorting by Payment OR Deposit column, while preserving a sort by date within that. Are you referring to something else?

The only function is a filter on the "Date" column as you can see the directional error in the screen print in my last post, which when you click on it, it switches the date order view (changes oldest date to to the top or to bottom based on the direction of the error).

But when your not in reconcile and just in the register, if you click on a column header it turns on what looks like a filter but I guess it is  really a "sort" function (A-Z or Z-A) but this is not enabled in reconciliation screen.

From the "idea" you purposed, I get that you what the ability to separate transactions by listing all deposits (credits) first together at the top lets say and then payments (debits) second after that and then checks (debits) after that type of functionality which  requires a "filter" function where you custom define the criteria in 1,2,3 order by Rows, or maybe they could just pre-program that option so it's just a change in view type.  This could be a nice option for manual reconciliation purposes to match the same order as the bank statement formats it. Online reconciliation I would imagine will need it in date order.

Yes, Ideally it would be nice to have the payments/debits and deposits/credits grouped together.

Just clicking on the Payment or Deposits amounts would only sort them by amounts but would lose the date order. So if there is an easy way to group them in the current view format without losing the date sort order in the same view, that would be great. If not, that would suggest the need for a separate view, such as a button or tab to switch between them.

For what it's worth, I like the current setup, and I was used to the old separate setup from QM2007.

In the "Register" if you click on the "Action" column it sorts Debits and Credits separately and each in date order. I have a separate column for "check" numbers and when I click on that it groups the check transactions together in date or too.

Now the "Filter" operation can be programmed so when you clicked on the "action" column it would display a drop down of each type of action you entered into the Action column throughout the register; Debit, Dep, Transfer, check #, APP, withdrawal, etc.  .  Then you could click on say Debits and it would only display Debits and hide the rest and then when you change the filter to "all" , everything returns to the normal view.  This is how a filter really works, what we have now is a "sort" function.  In all cases what is displayed should be in date order by default.

Currently in Reconcile screen, the only option is to change the date order direction from top to bottom of the register.

If full "filter" functionality was programmed into the registers including the reconcile screen, it should provide the flexibility you are looking for.

So, bottom is that a good choice for implementing this is adding FILTER functionality to the Reconciliation windows.  +1

In the old Quicken 2007, the reconcile feature allowed us to see our deposits & payments separately from one another, which is EXACTLY how our statements arrive: transactions are separated by deposits & payments.

However, in the new Quicken for Mac, we can ONLY sort the reconcile screen by date. If we can't group the transactions by deposits & payments, then at the very least, we should be able to SORT by deposits & payments.

    Thank you!

The reconciliation screen was revamped since the original request and some of the comments above, so some of the request above now exist in Quicken Mac. Of note:

    • The reconcile screen shows a running balance of cleared debit and credits (labeled Payments and Deposits), as well as uncleared transactions.
    • The reconcile screen can be sorted by check number by clicking on the Check Number heading
    • The reconcile screen can sort transactions by payment or deposit amount by clicking on the respective column headings.
    • While debits and credits aren't in two separate lists like in Quicken 2007, they are in separate columns, which makes it easy to review just debits or just credits in date order.

So as I see it, most of the requests in this thread have been addressed. The one requested feature which you cannot do is sort debits separate from credits and do a secondary sort in date order within each type of transaction.
