Quicken for Mac 2017 Version 4.5.6 Hangs

Randall GodfreyRandall Godfrey Member ✭✭
After getting the automatic message that there was a new version available (4.5.6, I have 4.5.4) I chose the update option (Mac OS 10.11.6). After the install and auto relaunch, Quicken hangs (not responding in the Force Quit window). After force quitting and relaunch it still hangs. After Mac restart, it still hangs. Dragged the old version out of the trash and launched that, so I'm back in business again. Deleted the 4.5.6 version.

Usually, these updates have been welcomed. Holding off on this one.

Take a look at the release history of the entire 4.5.x sequence and you'll see an ongoing series of problems. The last stable version of Quicken 2017 is 4.4.3.

4.5.4 has actually been working pretty good for me. Not impressed with the Loan function, and enabling transaction downloads on a loan causes my credit card from the same FI to be unrecognized. Weird bug, but working around it.

I had same problem today upgrading to 4.5.6.  Reverted back to 4.5.4.

Weird--you got me scared, but 4.5.6. is --crossed fingers--working so far.

    System?  I'm 10.12.5 on MacBook Pro 2016.

Same OS on MacBook Air.  If yours restarted I assume you are OK.  On mine after doing install and relaunch, it appeared Quicken restarted but hung up before loading data file.  Had to force quit.

I'm using 10.11.6 on a Mac Book Pro. Same result as Steve. Keep your fingers crossed DHC.

I could not update either. Got an error that Quicken could not access my backup file because I did not have permission to do so and it hangs trying to do the conversion. I had to go back to the old version as well. I made a new backup file and still got the same error. I am using the App Store version.

I also got the backup file error.

There was an error creating a backup of the document: “BACKUP (Pre-Update) - xxxxxx 2017-06-10.quicken2017backup” couldn’t be copied because you don’t have permission to access “Automatic Backups”.

It's been suggested on another thread that after the upgrade you just let it run for 30 minutes even though the Force Quit window says not responding. Supposedly, it is very busy checking the data files and can't respond to the OS. I'm going to try that, but I want to upgrade my Mac to the Sierra operating system (10.12) first. I'll report back on what happened.

Same issue here. Version 4.5.6 (just downloaded from the App store - gee, thanks) hangs on startup saying that it cannot access the Automatic Backups folder.

Anyone know how to get an earlier version of Quicken 2017 off the Apple App Store? It seems that once the latest version is installed there's no way to downgrade back to the earlier version, leaving me dead in the water.

I used time machine to restore the old version. That worked.

I don't back up my application directory. Is there a way to re-download an older version?

I restored the older version from my time machine backup. Worked like a charm.

I've rolled back to 4.4.3. Wasted a few hours I didn't have on this. Doesn't feel like quicken has adequate release and development testing for a financial application. Starting to regret moving to quicken on the mac.

You should be able to retrieve the old copy of the Quicken in your trash. You will also need to restore a previous copy of your data files if this was the first version of 4.5.x you are using, as it gets changed so older versions of Quicken cannot read the new modified data file.

Paul I got it to work. loaded it with the from scratch setting. Then once in the program I had it open my old file and it converted fine. Tested a Buch of thing and no issues so far

If you find the quicken file in what ever folder you have it right click and then use get info. Go to the bottom and unlock the file by clicking on the padlock in the lower right. Then along the bottom edge right after the plus and the minus signs click the drop down menu and make sure you are the owner of the file. If not click the link to change it to your ownership. Then for good measure change the access for your name, staff & everyone to read and right for good measure. Then try to use it on the new version of quicken . This also worked for me on another computer I had quicken running on.
If your worried about security issues. After the new quicken completes then go back and change everything back to the way it was.

I'm giving up on 4.5.6 for now. Think you are right, this does seem to be related to file system permissions, but I gotta say i'm very disappointed in the number of serious issues in this release i've seen people report and now myself experience when i finally get it.

After upgrading my Mac’s OS to Sierra 10.12.5, I opened my working copy of Quicken Mac 2017 (4.5.4) and again accepted the upgrade to version 4.5.6. Installation went smoothly as expected. When Quicken restarted, I got the spinning beach ball for about five minutes. I was just about to have a look at the Force Quit window when the spinning ball went away and I was presented with the main Quicken window.

I shut it down and restarted it — no problems. Then did it again and entered some data — again no problems. Quit and started again with no problems. So this problem is solved for me.

It is still marking my Bank of America credit card as Dead, so that problem still exists. (https://getsatisfaction.com/quickencommunity/topics/major-quicken-4-5-6-update-bugs-including-causin...)

Thanks to everyone reporting this issue in the forum and sending us in-product Report a Problem reports.  Because of your efforts, we've been investigating the issue since this morning and I think we've figured out what's happening.  We believe this is affecting only App Store customers that have set up a custom backup folder.  Basically, the App Store version of Quicken doesn't allow one to write to a backup folder outside of the sandbox container in our implementation and we always make a backup of your file before migrating to the new format.  Because we can't create a backup, we don't open the file.  We're still doing testing to make sure this is the issue but this is what we think is happening at this time.  I'll keep everyone posted as we learn more.

We've confirmed that anyone that has created a custom backup folder in the Mac App Store Version of Quicken will run into this issue.  The way we've implemented the backup feature doesn't work when using the Mac App Store version when trying to save outside of the Container folder on your Mac.  This is blocked by MacOS because of something called sandboxing.  It helps make using the app more secure since it doesn't let apps write files to anywhere on your machine without first explicitly getting approval from you.  This limitation doesn't exist for downloaded or retail versions of apps.  This is a bug that we need to fix.

If you've run into this issue, you will see an error message that looks like the following:
    image
In the short term, the way to fix this is to go to quit Quicken first.  Then open Terminal and type the following:
    defaults delete com.quicken.Quicken.2017 BackupDirectoryPath
This will revert your backup folder to the default location which does work.  Once you do this, you'll be able to open your file.  We'll make this easier in the next couple of days and will fix the core bug in a future update.

We are aware of another issue while opening files which can be fixed using a script that we've created.  See https://getsatisfaction.com/quickencommunity/topics/resolution-quicken-mac-2017-4-5-4-fails-to-launc... for this solution.

Just to be clear, none of this is related to version 4.5.6 per se.  4.5.6 is NOT corrupting files.  The issue is that 4.5.6 needs to convert your current file to the new format which was changed because we added the new loan feature and when Quicken does this we make a backup copy of your file first, migrate your current database, and once we verify that it was done successfully, we delete the old database.  All of these issues are because Quicken can't complete that task for some reason.

I don't have the appstore version. I bought it direct and I have this issue. Will this issue be fixed for those of us that don't have the appstore version?
