Updated version for Q17 for Mac bought on the App Store

buckeyedocbuckeyedoc Member ✭✭
When will the updated version be available for those of us that bought Quicken on the App Store? I know there is a lag due to App Store specific rules but we are getting real close to September 30th. I don't want to be locked out of my file on October 1st if I haven't been able to create a new ID and password.

Any ETA for it? Am I going to have to buy it again from Quicken.com? That would tick me off. If I had known that there were going to be issues because I bought it through the App Store, I would have bought it directly.

I never buy software through the Mac App Store if it's available otherwise. This is one of the reasons.

I don't know when the update will hit the App Store, but you could always buy the current version directly from Quicken, then when the App Store version is released, return the Quicken-purchased copy within the 60 day return policy.

That's an idea. That won't cause issues with the original installation? The software itself doesn't "remember" where it came from? Sounds strange but I've had an issue in the past (not Quicken but a competitor), where all traces of the prior program weren't removed from some registry file and it kept trying to install the old version which was corrupted.

Recommend just importing my file into the program or will it just load over the top of the old?

There are some slight differences in the program, most notably the default file location.

If you follow this path, you should first delete the MAS version of the app. You can reinstall it later using the Purchased tab in the MAS. When that time comes, first delete the Quicken-purchased copy. In each case, you may have to double click your data file to open as the app may not be able to find it, so make sure you know where your file is stored. When you double click a 4.5.8 data file  with 4.6.4 installed, 4.6.4 should offer to convert it.

By the way, I don't know what means Quicken uses to ensure that you erase the Quicken-purchase app when you return it (if at all).

Thanks. While I realize that this issue isn't really Quicken's fault, I don't like the hassle. They should point out the cons of buying off the App Store.

It is these constant little niggling things with Quicken that made me switch to iBank (now Banktivity) many years ago. I used that for about 8 years and with Q17 for Mac I decided to try it again. This hassle is making me reconsider. To me, the programs are essentially interchangeable with Q17 being a little more intuitive and easy to use but Banktivity being more customizable.

    Hi buckeyedoc,
The updated version will be available on the app store, but if you have the utility you should be able to update an app store version - hopefully this will help: https://www.quicken.com/support/updating-quicken-mac-purchased-mac-app-store

@Quicken Kathryn, that page only lists QM2015 and QM2016. Does it work with QM2017 also?

I suspect that they created that page because the MAS considers Quicken to be one program over the years and hence does not update the older versions. IOW, once 2017 came out, 2015 and 2016 are removed from the MAS and hence cannot be updated through the MAS. Thus, users are expected to update 2017 via the normal MAS process.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. IMO, I wouldn't sell Q17 on the App Store.

BTW- as of 1645 EST on September 29th, no updated version on the App Store. Cutting it kind of close aren't they?

I doubt they will be able to accelerate Apple's approval process much. And given that they only fully released the update via their channel earlier this week, I'm betting the MAS version is going to miss the deadline, possibly by quite a bit. Sorry to be pessimistic.

Anyone rolled this dice yet by trying to apply that Q15 / Q16 patch on their Q17 ?

I just answered my own question... I tried running the patch mentioned above and NO it does not work for Q17 purchased from Apple App Store.

Here is the message shown when trying to run it:

Quicken 2017 (App Store) was purchased from the App Store.

To install updates, choose “App Store” from the Apple menu () and click on the “Updates” tab.

@Quicken Kathryn, is there an update to the above utility for QM2017 users since that utility does not work?

No, Quicken instructed to use the tool for 2015 and 2016 versions only. It was a long shot that it might also work for 2017 and, as expected, it did not.

No, Kathryn offered it as a solution in the context of QM2017 up above. That tool and page were created some time ago to assist users stuck again due to server changes then too, where the MAS version was delayed.

Ugh! I'm hesitant to uninstall the MAS version and then purchase the one directly from Quicken. Based on prior experience, I would expect pain and misery trying to import the file and running into some darn file that lingers behind saying that there is another version of Q17 present.

Banktivity is starting to look pretty good. I already bought the newest version as an upgrade earlier this year. Quicken still favors their Windows users over their Mac ones. Not surprised. Why can't they get their act together?

I wonder if anyone has tried calling Apple and seeing what their response is to non-updated software with a drop dead deadline?

    Hi All,
Apologies for the late reply--the Mac app store should be online soon--there were some delays, but the update is being reviewed, and we've worked out a special exception that will prevent MAS users from being 'cut off' from services until the middle of October.

John, if you purchase Quicken from any retailer or directly from Quicken, as soon as Quicken releases an update, you get the update via a notice when you launch the program. If you purchase from the Mac App Store, then updates come via the Apple App Store, just like updates you macOS or other apps you buy from the App Store. Quicken has to submit each update to Apple for review, and when Apple approves each update, it shows up in the App Store. That's just the way Apple runs their ecosystem -- it's not anything that Quicken is doing wrong.

In my opinion, Quicken Mac users should not buy this program via the App Store. You get your updates later than everyone else, and you always pay full retail price (where Quicken often offers discounts and retailers like Amazon usually sells at a discount). That's no help to you right now, but the next time you're ready to purchase an upgraded version of Quicken, you might consider changing where you buy it.

Update....as of 10-28-2017, latest version is NOT in the app store, and I'm stuck with a laptop that cannot open my file due to the required unavailable update.  Will most likely never buy this thru the app store again.
