Allow "Add from Scanner" on Attachment Pop-Up Menu (3 merged votes)

This idea is for Quicken for Windows.

If I click on the paper clip icon of a transaction that has an existing attachment a small pop-up window appears in which there is a "Add" button.  Clicking the Add button reveals a small menu with two options:

For reasons that aren't clear to me, there is no "Add from Scanner" on that menu.  If I want to add another attachment from the scanner I have to click on the angled arrow to open the larger Add Attachment window, where the Add button reveals a menu that includes "Add from Scanner":

My request is that the three item menu should be shown from both Add buttons to reduce the number of clicks needed to add an additional item from the scanner.

I was just looking at this, and it is a bit strange.  You only get the angle arrow button if you have already stored an attachment on that transaction.  And it is in that case where the "Add from scanner..." menu item is missing.

To me this looks like a bug.  Not something that was designed this way.

Yes, I wasn’t sure whether it was intentional or a bug, but I opted to post it as an idea. Hopefully someone in the development team might spot it, but at the moment I think there are bigger fish to fry with the changeover to the Quicken ID.

In beta I would definitely submit it as a bug, not a suggestion.

Personally though I think that whole dialog is a mess.  there are much more efficient ways of getting the information they need to add the attachments.

I'm not a beta tester though...

And I agree the process is a bit clunky overall, but correcting that menu would remove one of the issues with it.

For years, I have waited for Quicken to improve the Scan function using the desktop app. Using the current version, the basic process for scanning and attach receipts to a register entry remains untouched.

Some of the selections remain persistent from one scan to the next. However for every scan, I must select/review this process:

    1) Click Add Attachment
    2) Click Add dropdown
    3) Click Add from scanner...
    4) Select Source
    5) Select 'Select'
    6) Select type of picture
    7) Select Preview
    8) Review Crop
    9) Scan
    10) Close final window

Working at my desk, I only ever use the same scanner, to scan receipts. Also, when I click the add attachment, most of the time, it is to do a scan. Perhaps 5% of the time, I need to add a file (e.g. receipt emailed as PDF).

Here's what I'd like to see:

    A) Consider modifying the UI so, in the register entry, you can have separate Add File and Scan selections.

B For scanning, provide the user a means of configuring their scanner and related process.
For instance, in a 'Scan Configuration' dialog, let the user specify Source, Type of Picture, to Preview (or not, as a default).

Finally, as with some other scan solutions, simply do one scan. The preview scan can be done full res, let the user review and adjust crop, then hit Save/Accept. There's not need to go do a second scan if you've cached the first scan, just do a formal write once accepted.

Scanning is one of those things that's been woefully overlooked. I don't think it's seen an update, when looking at the UI at least, since it's introduction a decade ago. Time for a rethink.

    Thanks

    Good suggestions !

I use my scanner similarly and I am familiar with the same high-click process.

I have also found that I need to use the WIA driver because Quicken does not play nicely with my Canoscan driver.

Also, quite often communications between my (high end Canon) scanner and Quicken lock up and I need to cancel out and restart the process; most of the time I don't have to restart the scanner.

Well, as the originator of the suggestion, I'd still like to see it implemented. It's not uncommon for me to add more than one attachment to a transaction and it would be more convenient for me.

It's not a showstopper, just a small improvement to the application that would improve its usability.

I voted for this. It seems like a simple bug of omission. Like one line of code missing.
The "Add from scanner" is available other ways, too, such as the right-click menu of a banking transaction > Attachments, and in the Attach button (if enabled) in an investment transaction.

Quicken user since version 2 for DOS, now using QWin Premier Subscription (US) on Win10 Pro.

I agree. Since attachments were added back in several years ago, it's always been that way. once you have an attachment, the scanner option goes away. It doesn't matter how you attach the initial attachment.

  • Currently, if you have an attachment to a saved transaction, and you want to scan another document and attach it, the drop down list only allows you to add a file or add from clipboard. IT SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE "ADD FROM SCANNER". This is a BUG. Currently, you have to expand the attachments to see all three options. Fix this please.
