Quicken loses cursor focus

Cannot toggle or jump from quicken with mouse to other apps without losing cursor focus. Very frustrating and just occurred with latest update. Will not continue to use if this is not corrected. 2015 version

I have this problem too, with the 2018 version.  I go back and forth between Quicken and other apps all the time, usually during data entry, and having to reset the focus every time is extremely annoying.  This worked in Quicken 2017.

I have the same problem and agree with Roy.  It is "extremely annoying".  I also see that Quicken has not replied to this problem report.  I am in the process of deciding whether or not to upgrade to Quicken 2018 or switch to another product.  I have been a Quicken user for many years and the last few updates have not fixed problems that are obvious.

To Quicken:  Please fix this and other problems being reported quickly or you will lose customers!

I have this same issue with Quicken 2016.  I look forward to a software update to resolve something that has worked for 10 years.

TIP: grab the quicken screen and drag it right until the mouse cursor touches the right border of your monitor. then grab your other app that you need to consult so much and drag it to the left until the mouse cursor touches the  left border.

Sharing the page is an obvious short term work around but does not fix the problem of losing focus. Quicken needs to resolve this issue

If I understand the suggestion, which seems to be to make the Quicken register window and the other app window non-overlapping, it doesn't solve the problem.  Specifically, here's the desired sequence:

With the focus somewhere in a Quicken register entry, type ALT-TAB to switch to the another open app containing text to be copied into Quicken.  Select the desired text, type CTRL-C to copy it, then type ALT-TAB to return to the Quicken register.  Finally, type CTRL-V to paste the copied text where the focus was when the first ALT-TAB was typed.

Unfortunately, in Quicken 2018, the final step doesn't work because the focus has disappeared from the Quicken register, so typing CTRL-V to paste has no effect.  Instead, one must first reselect the desired type-in point in the Quicken register.

I don't believe the arrangement of the windows has any effect on the behavior of Quicken 2018.  Overlapping windows or not, the focus doesn't return to the Quicken register on the second ALT-TAB.

Come on Quicken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  This has been an ongoing BUG since 2014 versioning.  Its plastered all over your Installing new version in the past fixed it but 2 months ago, an update broke 2015 version.

So...I laid out $$$$ to buy/rent 2018 and its broken out of the box. Also, the "preferred customer support" that is offered as a Quicken 2018 Premier buyer is really really lame. No answers. Basically didn't even understand with the issue is. You need to offer some time of direct connection with a tier 2 level support person like Apple does for folks investing in their products.

Now PLEASE show us you care about us and answer/acknowledge these posts and tell us your fixing it.

Read your own employee's intro post to your forum :

    Hi All,

Now that we've moved here to our new community, we've got a new way of gathering your feedback on Quicken.  If you previously used our surveys for Quicken Windows or Mac, don't worry--we're still reviewing all of that valuable feedback.

If you have new feedback on Quicken, please follow these steps:
    1. Go to the Ideas section of the community.
    2. Review the top list of ideas, and see if anyone else has posted it - if they have, open the post and click on "Me Too" so we know which ideas are the most popular (more popular=more likely to be implemented).
    3. If you don't see your idea, add a new post describing your idea--be as detailed as possible, and select the "Idea" topic type.
    4. Keep an eye on your notifications to see if we're planning on implementing your idea.
This process works for both Windows and Mac products.

That's all there is to it!

I would like a fix to the auto focus as well.  In the meantime, here's a little work-around:  ALT-A

Could you please clarify what the workaround is?  Typing ALT-A doesn't seem to have any useful effect for me (and it's not documented as doing anything in the Quicken Help, though of course that wouldn't be definitive).  Thanks.

ALT-A brings the focus back to the Quicken register after returning to it from another program (ALT-TAB).  It may not return focus to the exact field in the register, but at least you are focused back in Quicken and can tab to the field you need.  Like I said, it's certainly not perfect, but at least you can keep your hands on the keyboard.  I'm running Deluxe 2017. Good luck!

I tried your suggestion.  ALT-A does in fact return the focus to Quicken as you noted.  However, if I was in the middle of creating a register entry when I originally left Quicken to get something from another app (typically copying it in order to paste into the Quicken register), returning via ALT-TAB and ALT-A "finishes" the partial entry, as if I had clicked "Save", and then positions the focus at the start of a new entry.  So I can't then TAB to the field I was working on because I'm in a new, blank entry.  I first have to reselect the old entry so, alas, ALT-A doesn't help much.  I appreciate the suggestion, however.

I'm wondering if I'm having the same issue. If I click on a category or other field like description for a new row, focus is momentarily on the Category but then immediately jumps to the date. I can then pause for a moment and click again on category to get focus where I want. Is this normal? Why would quicken not just focus on what I click on. I'd pay Quicken to fix this issue. Or maybe it is a feature.

Same problem. Used to work and disappeared with a recent upgrade to Quicken 2017 for Windows. Upgraded to 2018 version, but same (broken) issue. Here is my use case:

    1. I collect certain receipts (ATM, online purchase, etc.) in email and I store them in a Gmail folder.
    2. Periodically I enter those transactions in Quicken.
    3. I open my first "pending" receipt in Gmail.
    4. Go to Quick and start my transaction to various vendor - the application will remember my last transaction / category used for that vendor
    5. I tab to the amount field in Quicken.
    6. I ALT-TAB back to Chrome (Gmail) to look at the amount on my receipt
    7. I ALT-TAB back to Quicken
    8. THE FOCUS IS LOST ON MY AMOUNT FIELD - I USED TO BE ABLE TO JUST START TYPING THE AMOUNT IMMEDIATELY AFTER RETURNING TO QUICKEN USING ALT-TAB.

I'm with you, Karl.  Evidently quite a few people have workflows, like you and I do, that require frequent ALT-Tabbing between Quicken and another app as we fill in register entries, and this bug disables those workflows.  I sure hope we here from someone at Quicken before I get too old to type. :-)

This is long debated small bug in several versions and updates from long time ago. It has been fixed in several update/patch but re-introduced when the new patch come. I remember, this year it has been fixed in a release but now, in R15, it coming back.
What I can conclude is, Quicken is very bad at version control and they don't know what the latest source is when doing the fixes.
Their program is the best but their support is very worst.

Agreed.  Losing updates is a major hazard of forked development, which is almost inevitable when developing a new version in parallel with maintenance of an existing one.  That said, it's a well-known hazard, and any serious software company has to adopt a development methodology to avoid it, otherwise they end up fixing the same bug multiple times.  It isn't easy, but it isn't rocket science either -- just disciplined software engineering practice.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Alt-Tab on Windows 10 loses field focus (Quicken 2017 R14 26.1.14.1).

A recent update to Quicken 2017 seems to have broken Alt-Tab field focus logic on Windows 10. If for example I'm entering an entry into an account, and Alt-Tab to another window and then back again to Quicken, the field that had focus previously has lost focus. I must manually click on the field again with my mouse. Previous versions of Quicken (for many years) kept the focus on a given field. Microsoft Excel has always done this correctly as well, so Alt-Tabbing back and forth doesn't lose focus/selection/highlighting on whatever field had focus originally.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Cursor disappears after each register entry and I must click in the date field to....

Previously, when I pressed ENTER after making an entry In the register, the entry was saved and my cursor moved automatically to the date field of the next entry. After a recent update, the cursor now disappears after each register entry and I must click in the date field to start a new one. This slows down entry of information dramatically, very annoying ... help!!

I too have this same issue with Quicken 2017. A workaround that works for me is once I return to the Quicken window and the focus has been lost, I just press Alt key and hold it down for about a second and the focus will return to the field where the focus was when I switched from the Quicken window.  I hope this can work for someone else.

I suggest all unhappy users dump quicken. Use FREE GnuCash public domain accounting software. I exported Quicken data, imported to GnuCash and never looked back. POS non support product can wither and die.

That works, but doesn't really improve things much.  I was going to say it requires switching from mouse to kbd, but you're going to do that anyway so I suppose learning to quickly hit Alt+S before typing could improve things very slightly.  Still, Quicken's handling of both display and input seem to be mired in custom low-level code that needs to be ripped out and replaced with standard APIs.  Who remembers Quicken repainting the entire window a dozen or more times on every change?  That may still be happening, we just can't see it due to graphics adapters being so fast nowadays.

It’s a workaround for sure and not ideal in any way! Horrible customer service
