Hide/Unhide Accounts all at once (26 Legacy Votes)

It would be useful to be able to temporarily unhide all hidden accounts for a brief time and then re-hide them.  I have a number of accounts that I keep hidden on a daily basis but I want to view them occasionally and keep them updated. Would be nice to do all at once instead of checking them individually.

One of the primary reasons for this is to get these accounts updated. If the accounts updated behind the scenes from banks, investments, etc even while hidden, this wouldn't really be needed.

Thank you.

This is for Mac... there is no Tools menu.  ;-)

    Hello all,

The option for Mac would be in Accounts / Hide or Show Accounts.

Correct. However, there is no way to unhide all hidden accounts at once to let them update and then re-hide them. I have to uncheck and recheck each one individually. This is a pain if you have a fair number of accounts hiddent. Another option would be to just allow hidden accounts to update balances in the background.  Thank you.

So what this is really asking for is a checkbox in Preferences > Connected Services that says "Include hidden online accounts in Update All Online Accounts".

IMO, updating "behind the scenes" would not be a wise choice. While most downloaded transactions are just fine, I believe timely review by the user is required and appropriate. Something "behind the scenes" would become very easy for a user to miss and not follow up promptly.

But I'll add that my hidden accounts are limited to what many would deem closed. I would not choose to hide any accounts where I would be downloading transactions.

I would support the OP's first option - that is the ability to temporarily show hidden accounts with a simple click; e.g., a check box in the Show and Hide Accounts window.

I have occasional need to search hidden account registers. It is a real pain to wade through the list to unhide accounts - and then wade through again to rehide.

I rename all my hidden accounts with a "z" at the front of the name which collects them at the bottom of the window, making unhiding and re-hiding a bit easier.

    I use a © prefix (Opt-G) for closed accounts, which I then hide   ;-)

@JM the alternative to your dilemma is to provide the following feature: to which I see you have already added your vote for.

On the Windows side, the check box to show hidden accounts is included in pretty much all account selection dialogs. So there is no need to unhide/hide to search in hidden accounts or include hidden accounts in a report.

On the Mac side, there is a checkbox to include hidden accounts when generating reports. However, the OP is asking for hidden accounts to be included in OSU. As q.lurker points out, I'm not sure this is such a good idea.

@smayer97... I'd love to find a special character that sorts to the end alphabetically, but every one I've tried (including ©) sorts to the beginning.

And that is maybe why the OP is asking for a feature to do it manually as needed.

Strange about the sorting... QM2015+ must be using a different sorting criteria than QM2007 because © sorts at the end. Oh well, will have to hunt for a new char when the time comes.

So if the user temporarily unhides the hidden accounts, then hides one other account, then tries to undo the temporary unhide, how does Quicken know what to hide again. Seems like the GUI for this might get kind of complicated.

I agree I do not see an easy solution to track accounts to unhide and re-hide without building a complete UI for it.

Thank you all for the many ideas. Wow. I am really impressed with the community!

After reading many of these reviews, I think the following might have been what I should have suggested:

Have a Show/Hide hidden accounts box at the top or bottom of the Account sidebar. That would really make it easy to get them all to appear at once. I could then do my account updates, check balances and hide them back with one click.

This would be somewhat similar to Quickbooks Account list where the Account button has a Show Inactive Accounts option. Selecting this adds all inactive accounts to the list. See attached. This could be Show Hidden Accounts. And, if they are showing, the selection changes to Hide Hidden Accounts or some other terminology that makes sense.

I was going to ask for a Show/Hide Hidden Accounts option on all the reports and displays like QWin but this sounds a lot simpler.
