Account Bar Balance Does NOT Match Register Balance

Using 2018 R11.20, The accounts bar balance does not match the balance shown in the register.  The register is correct.  Not affected by the savings goals.  No uncleared/un-reconciled transactions.  Repaired/validated did not fix it. I've seen a lot of other posts on this but no solutions. Finance software that doesn't display correct balances is useless to me.

What type of balance does the grand total at the bottom of the Account Bar show?
    • "Net Worth" aka Current Balance (today's balance)
      or
    • "Ending Balance" (today's balance +/- future transactions already recorded in register)

    Can
you please capture one or more images of the parts of your Quicken window
showing the issue, sensitive information blacked out as necessary to protect
your privacy but annotated to describe the situation, and attach the image(s)
    here?

The Windows Snipping Tool (available with Windows 7 and up) can be used to
capture a partial screen image and save it to a file.  Microsoft Paint can be used to annotate the
    image.

Net Worth; set to "Show Current Balance in Account Bar".  The balance in the account bar is different than the Online, Current and Ending Balance in the register for this account. The only thing an image would show is two unequal numbers.

Are there any scheduled reminders due today or past due that haven't been converted into real register transactions yet?
    How much is the difference?
Does the difference equal the sum of certain transactions, unpaid reminders and/or savings goals entries?
How long has this been going on?

Without working with your data, it's practically impossible for us to figure out what may be wrong.

I don't consider it a solution, but selecting the "show savings goals transactions in register" fixed THIS accounts balance in the accounts bar, but caused all the other accounts to now show balances that do not match the online balance as they have savings transactions (the broken account has NO savings transactions or un-reconciled transactions). Deleting ALL savings goals from the "Planning" tab put the other accounts back to their online balances.   No savings transactions had been entered between the time that this was working and broke.  This is only a slightly less frustrating band-aid than deleting and re-adding the account (which also corrected the mismatch in balances) and, as this is only a workaround, is likely to occur again.

The problem was first noticed a week or so ago. No past due reminders and/or un-entered reminders. The difference matched one transaction/transfer that was reconciled before the issue occurred.  deleting the transaction/transfer caused the balance in the accounts list to adjust by the same amount (ie the difference in values was unchanged). The other account involved in the transfer is correct. No savings goals are used with this bad account, but the other account involved in the mentioned transfer does have savings goals associated, but the balance of this account displays correctly and correctly reacts to "Shows Savings Goals Transactions in register".

Are you syncing to the Mobile app?
I rather suspect that your balance problems may be caused by Sync to Mobile messing up transfer transactions, especially if this problem is "new as of the installation of patches for R 11.18"

It's my understanding that the Quicken programmers are working on it, but I'm not sure if they're aware of Savings Goals possibly having an impact on this issue.
You might want to call Quicken Support and make them aware of your issue.

I manually re-built my savings goals and savings transactions and the problem came back with the exact same difference between account bar and register.  The account in error has 0 savings transactions.  If I change settings to show savings goals it reverts to a value that matches current and online values, but all other accounts show balances that factor in savings goals and do not match online or current balances.

I'm now and have been using the mobile app. The app shows correct values for today's balance, online balance, and future balance in the banking and credit page.

I re-deleted all savings goals and the problem persisted, unlike the previous time when that fixed the issue.  I reverted to a backup copy and this time walked through more slowly.

    1. Deleted all savings goals - All balances match between register and account list (current, online, and future).

    2. Added savings goal, with no transactions.
             a. With "show current savings goals" turned on, the current and future balances are correct.
             b. with "show current savings goals" turned off, the current and future balances are incorrect                   and do not match any values in register.

    3. Deleted savings goals while the "shows savings goals" setting was turned on (showed the         correct value in the accounts list) - After doing this all the values we correct.

    4. Added a new savings goal with no transactions

    5. With "show savings goals" setting turned off (incorrect values shown) I deleted the savings goal.
-The balances now remain in their incorrect state (both future and current are incorrect).
         - have not been able to revert back by adding/deleting savings goals - forced to revert to backup            copy. Again, no savings transactions have been entered, just a savings goal.  Value of goal did           not affect it.  Data did not affect it, but the incorrect value was always the same.

Any luck figuring this out?  I have had the same issue for a couple of weeks.  Before I googled searched for this, I spend most of today manually deleting and re-creating savings goal as you stated in your last post with the steps 1-5.  I am VERY frustrated to say the least!!

No. I had to stop using savings goals. This isn't even my biggest issue anymore.  This program is more trouble than it's worth; there are free programs that work better and have access to more financial institutions.

I had an issue for over a year where the balance in the account bar was always exactly $74 more than the balance in the register. Not sure if it's the same thing you're seeing, but sounds similar. Since it wasn't affecting anything important (other than my OCD nerve), I ignored it.

Recently rebuilt the account in a new Quicken file, and no more issues.. not saying that's a viable solution (frankly, I'd call it unacceptable if someone tried to tout it as a solution) -- just saying the problem is likely somewhere in the database file for the account.

I ended up starting a new file.  Took about a week before the issue occurred again.  This time in a different account.  This time however I know the exact transaction, but still can't do a thing about it.

A paycheck, that was setup with tax info and 401(k) deposits, after being cleared, matched, reconciled, somehow changed such that in the register of the account that the paycheck is deposited in only shows a deposit equal to the 401(k) contribution value (which is deposited into a different account).  So let's say the paycheck is $1000 and the 401(k) is $200, my account register shows a deposit of $200 rather than $1000.  The $200 deposit also shows up in the 401(k) account.  The net salary end up nowhere. This causes the register balance of that account to be off by the difference of net salary to 401(k) (-$800 in the example).  To try and correct the issue I deleted the paycheck deposit and then rescheduled the next paycheck to the deleted paycheck date.  I entered that paycheck and now the register displays the correct value at the bottom right (online, ending, and current all correct).  The value displayed in the accounts bar on the left is now incorrect. It shows one paycheck greater than it should (+$1000 greater in example).

YES! This particular issue is a different thing, I think, from the balance in the account bar stuff, but I've recently had an issue several times where following an update, a paycheck entry would suddenly only show as the amount of the 401k transfer. Typically, I have a mild heart attack after seeing the future balances run red, but then I figure out it's the paycheck entry going sideways again.

Generally, I can delete the transfer within the paycheck and recreate it to fix the transaction.

If I'm doing file validations semi-regularly, it'll show up in the log as a faulty transaction prior to it actually breaking.

I would be happy if I could simply delete and re-enter.  If I delete then somehow the net pay stays in the accounts balances (but disappears from the running balance in the account register). Once I add it back the running balance is correct but the account bar is incorrect.

I validate my file pretty regularly and after validating this transaction was flagged as broken (although I'm not sure if I remember it being flagged before I started trying to fix it), but I can't figure out how to fix it.  It says to delete and re-add, but that leads to the mismatched balances.

I have the same problem that has occurred with our previous version of Deluxe 2016 and has carried over to our new updated Deluxe 2019 version.  I really don't want to recreate our entire database.  This is a very annoying glitch.

I went through the same issue right after I downloaded new transactions.  The register was the correct ending balance but the account bar (checking) was totally a different figure.  What I did was right hand click the problematic account and chose the option: "Show Ending Balance in the Account Bar" and that instantaneously corrected the problem.  For some some reason, only the checking account was not checked, the rest of the accounts have the same option.  Hope this helps.

Me too, and I don't have savings goals.  In my case, they should just correct Quicken to allow balance adjustments to an investment brokerage account.  I know the EOM acct balance from the monthly statement, it would be easy to fix.  Q shows the same negative number with both net worth or current balance selected.  Worthless and ridiculous we have to spend so much time fixing bugs in the program.

    That already exists.
Note that in the case of an investment account you need to reconcile both your securities and your cash.

In fact if you reconcile and accept a non zero balance it will put one in for the cash balance.

Select the gear icon in register and you will see the two options.
Note if you adjust your security share balance some calculations will no longer be displayed because Quicken won't know your cost basis in those securities.

Nope, sorry, you don’t understand the problem.  I said the brokerage investment account not the linked cash account.   “You cannot reconcile or update a CMA-linked investment account, ..... go to the linked cash account. “   The brokerage investment account balance in the Acct Bar is wrong.   It’s a negative value although the securities value in the account ledger seems correct.   Toggling between “show current balance in account bar” or “show ending balance...” does not change the negative value. The linked cash account is correct and reconciled, validated, and up to date.  Investment account shares are reconciled. File validated.  I did not find a suspect transaction in the ledger or any transaction out of the ordinary in the time I wasted working on this.    And, I am not the only one with this issue.

This is the first time you have mentioned that you have a linked cash account, and note that no one else in this thread is talking about that either.  So yes I assumed you have a regular investment account not linked to a cash account.

Of course you can't "reconcile" an investment account connected to linked cash account.  The "reconcile" is for cash transactions, and all of them are in the linked cash account.  It makes no sense at all to have a cash balance adjustment in an investment account that doesn't have a cash balance.

Past that no I don't know what the bug is that is causing your problem.

But it seems to me that multiple problems are being discussed in this thread, which most likely just confuses everyone trying to solve their problem.

Have the same problem with Quicken version R17.4, build 6.1.17.4.  This is so frustrating.  Sidebar is different from account balance by 619.58.  Don't do savings goals, don't do downloads.  Everything is manually entered in register and balances to the firm's balance.  Last time, Quicken "help" stated to reenter everyting in a new account.  My first transaction is April 1999.  Not about to do that.  This shouid not be a hard fix.  Quicken, go look where the numbers are coming from.
  • I had a similar issue.  For me I had to go to the "settings" gear on the account bar, click the affected account, click "options" down below then check "show ending balance in account bar" instead of "show net worth in account bar".  Seems like R19.5 update switched this for me.

    "Ivan Socher ,

    Hi,

Are you allowing Bill and Income Reminders to appear in the Register, or do you have Do Not Show selected?

Have you entered future payments in the Register?

You need to understand some terms:

Online Balance is reflective of your last download. It may not equal the Online Balance at the Website. If you haven't performed a One Step Update Register, yet.

Current Balance is the Balance of the Register ending on the Current Date.

Ending Balance is the Balance after all Future Transactions entered in the Register has been paid.
