Quicken 2018 for MAC: How do I search on the memo field?

mar27mar27 Member ✭✭
I just converted from Quicken 2007 for MAC to Quicken 2018 for MAC.  I used the memo field extensively.   I cannot find a way to search across transactions based on a word in the memo field to get to the actual transaction (if in a split the entry in the split).  When I do a search on the main screen in the search all visible columns box I get a list of transactions but they are the top transaction with SPLIT in the category field and the memo for the overall split.  I'd have to open up dozens individually to try to find what I am looking for.   I could do a report in 2007, specify my criteria and it would bring up the entry under a split.  Thanks!

Let's see if I understand what you're asking... You have a certain word in the memo field in a line of a split transaction. You want to know how to see just the split lines with that word. Is that right?

If that's it... there's no direct way (that I know of) to see only the split lines broken out after a search. But there are a couple of indirect ways. (They will seem complicated at first, but pretty easy once you see what's going on.)

    They both start the same:
    1. Click in the search box of a register or group register.
    2. Click the magnifying glass icon and choose Memo/Notes to limit the search to that field.
    3. Enter your search word and hit Enter.
    4. If desired, set the Date, Type and Status filters to further limit the search.
    5. Your register view will now contain all transactions containing the search word in either the main transaction memo or any memo field in a split.
    Now there are two options:

    A. Print the register:
    1. Select menu File > Print.
    2. Modify the default Include settings if desired and click OK.
    3. Print to paper, or click the PDF menu in the Print Dialog to open in Preview.
    4. Each line of split transactions will be split out with an "S"
    B. Export to CSV:
    1. Click menu File > Export > Register Transactions to CSV File...
    2. Export the CSV file to a convenient location such as the Desktop.
    3. Open the CSV file with Excel or Numbers.
    4. As in the printout, the split lines will be listed individually with an "S" in the Split column
    5. The advantages of this method are that you can adjust the column widths and even sort by the memo field.
    Hope that helps.

Yes, you have come across one of the weakest areas in QM2019, customizing reports. To get the same effect, you would need at least 2 features.

THANK YOU!!!   The CSV export works great.  Well, not as great as Quicken 2007 but it works.  Great step by step directions.
