FORCED UPGRADE

Using Quicken 2017  I have all the disks on Quicken back to 2002. I only use it to get stock prices and for the investment features. [removed - inaccurate] I cant use the software like I did before unless I upgrade to the new version and pay the LIST PRICE.

Previously, I waited until the Spring and probably will buy the upgrade when offered on sale. [rant redacted]

Quicken 2017 should be good until 4/30/2020.

What is compelling you to upgrade now?

You can buy from many retailers, usually at much better prices:
    Amazon, Walmart, Costco, OfficeDepot, ...

And Quicken 2017 is supported until the end of April 2020.

You don't have to pay the list price.  In your online account set your subscription to not auto renew.  Then shop around at places like Amazon.com or Staples and when you see a good price buy it.  Whatever term you get (you can often get a  2 year subscription for a good price) when you activate it the new term gets added to your current subscription.

Above is what I see on my account. So since I have the newest version of Quicken, my 2017 version would have lasted for 3 years but when I upgraded to the 2018 version, it only lasts for one year. That doesn't seem fair?

Yeah, it isn't "fair", but is what you purchased.  If you still have your install for Quicken 2017 you could let the subscription lapse, uninstall Quicken "subscription", and install Quicken 2017 and use it until 2020.

That is a good idea but with each release the appear to modify the data records so a current backup wouldn't be compatible with a prior version (my guess didn't try)

One of the nice things Quicken Inc did opposed to what Intuit's policy was is that starting with Quicken 2016 the data file is backwards compatible.  You can open your data file in Quicken 2017.

That answer wasn't intuitive.  You had to know that fact. Thanks for the information.

It certainly isn't something that I would expect to be intuitive, but it is also not "announced/discussed/supported" by Quicken Inc, but it is true.

It just occurred to me that you might have thought I said the fact that the data files are now backwards compatible is intuitive.  I didn't Intuit is the name of the company that owned Quicken before it became Quicken Inc, and they had a policy of changing the data file configuration every year so it wasn't backwards compatible.

BTW, I do not think Quicken did this by design... I think it is simply a matter that the database structure has not needed to be changed and that is what still makes it backward compatible.

seems like you did not need to purchase the "new" version after a year of buying your Quicken 2017.  You should have held out.  When did you buy the Quicken 2017?  or since you bought Quicken in November of 2017, did you think you were buying the 2017 version?

Actually bought the 2018 version which it says on the CD. They touted new features in the investing area that appealed to me so I bought the new version not realizing I was shortening the 3 year update access that the 2017 version gave to me.

Not according to the Quicken employee I talked to.  According to her "they figured out a way to do it."

BTW it takes "effort" to be backwards compatible.  First off you have to take out the code that does the conversion.  Second you have make sure the existing and new code behaves correctly to ignore fields or in the case of moving from old to new, provides reasonable default behavior when fields are missing.
