Move ERO (Emergency Records Organizer) Data to New Quicken File

John CrickJohn Crick Member ✭✭
After using Quicken for 20+ years, the data file became corrupt. My wife and I started a new Quicken data file from scratch in July 2018.  In doing our annual financial review I realized that the new file no longer has the ERO information that had been a part of the previous files ... lots of data missing.

Is there a way to export ERO data from an old back-up and import it into our new Quicken file?  Hoping to save a LOT of manual re-entries.

(Currently using Quicken 2019 for Windows.)

Thank you!

John

Assuming that your separate ERO file still exists, please try this:

In Quicken using your new data file
    • Click on View / Classic Menus
    • In the Menu line click on Property & Debt
    • In the popup click on Emergency Record Organizer

Thank you for the follow-up.  How would I get a separate ERO file from a restored Quicken file?  That I can import into the new Quicken file?

What would be the file extension of the ERO file?

AFAIK, the ERO data are kept in a file separate from the Quicken data file. And that's why I said "Assuming that ... the file still exists"
The file should be / have been in the same folder that contains your Quicken data file.
I'm sorry, I don't remember the file name, but I'd guess it's something like ERO.* or a combination of the words Emergency Records Organizer. Starting ERO should tell you what's found and what the default name for the database is.

I found a file "ERO.dat" in the Programs folder, but nothing similar in the folder that the data file is saved.  Seems that I may have to start from scratch, unfortunately.

I uninstalled Quicken, re-installed it with the hopes that it might recognize the ERO.dat file ... no luck.

    Thank you for assisting, though.

Quicken itself does not recognize the ERO file directly. You need to install the ERO feature and let it open the actual ERO file (this actual file would not be in any Program Files folder, because Windows does not normally allow data files to be stored in Program Files folders)

When running ERO use the menus to see if you can locate your old ERO file.
Of course, if you had this file on an old computer, didn't migrate it and the old computer has since been wiped ... :-(

Thanks.  I followed all of the steps, but no luck in locating an ERO data file.  Once Quicken opened after ERO installation, still a blank ERO file, no historical data.

If I open a restored version of the corrupted file, the ERO shows the complete data.  Not seeing that this ERO data is in a separate file, or transferable to the new Quicken file.

(All files are on the same computer.  I have access to many years of data.)

Also, when I open ERO in Quicken 2019, there is no open to open a file.

You have to point the ERO feature to open your original ERO.dat file.

Back on this topic. Still no resolution, unfortunately.

I can restore an old Quicken file and see the ERO data. But have not found a way to extract that data so that it can be imported into my newly created Quicken file.

Any further suggestions on how to move the ERO data from one file to another?

    Thanks, mucrick

    Hello @John Crick

Thank you for posting back on this topic, although I apologize for any frustration or inconvenience experienced.

I did a little research and testing in my personal data files and was able to confirm that the Emergency Records Organizer information is stored in the Quicken Data File (.QDF) and is specific to each individual file.

Unfortunately, this does mean that the data cannot be moved or restored in a new file and would need to be re-entered, I apologize.

Alternatively, the restored back-up copy of the corrupted file could be kept and opened to access the already entered information in the ERO program when needed.

I hope this information is helpful and please let us know if there are further questions/concerns.

    Thank you,

    Sarah
