Cannot add _DivInc Category to Budget

Dividend-related investment account transactions are automatically categorized by Fidelity/Quicken as _DivInc (i.e., each downloaded transaction shows an amount in the Dividends box).

In the Budget tab and the Select Categories to Budget window, _DivInc does not appear in the category list, so I click Options at the lower left and click Manage. _DivInc appears in the list of available categories; I click Add, but after I click OK it does NOT get added to the budget.

Note that I *CAN* see summary of _DivInc transactions when I run a report on them.

The workaround would appear to be to Recategorize all transactions categorized as _DivInc to a different category. In my case, I created one called Dividend Income, put it in the Personal Income Group and assigned it to Schedule B Dividend Income tax category. When I tried to do this, Windows displayed a “(Not Responding)” message in the Recategorize window. I gave it a few minutes then force-quit Quicken. When I reopened it, none of the _DivInc transactions had been recategorized. So, it appears that Quicken does not allow you to recategorize transactions that have automatically been “categorized” as _DivInc.

So, the question remains: how can I add the _DivInc category to my budget?

The _DivInc category is accessible as a hidden category in Personal Income:

And if that category truly is marked "hidden" in Quicken, you can un-hide it.
Go into the Category List, check the "Show hidden Categories" box.
Scroll down to the end of the list, where all the built-in categories beginning with an _underscore are.
Locate the _DivInc category and click to remove the checkmark in the box in the "Hide" column.
Do the same for other built-in categories marked "hidden" that you wish to use.

Thanks Sherlock and UKR for taking a shot at this. Something seems amiss in my file. In the Select Categories to Budget window, _DivInc is nowhere to be found, even though it is NOT hidden in the Category List. I ran a File Validation and it's squeaky-clean. So I'm still stick - any other ideas? TIA.

What we've got here is a Catch-22 situation. You can't edit the bad built-in category to add the missing Group and Tax Line Item. You also can't rename or delete it to create a replacement category.
I have no idea, if or how a damaged built-in category can be repaired.

If you haven't done so already, I'd say it's time to call Quicken Support on the phone and request help.  Let them do a screen share session with you to review the situation on your computer, to determine the nature of the problem and to figure out how to fix it.
