    Are you able to backup the data file to a folder on an internal device and use File Explorer to move the backup to the external drive?

    @sstatz How is that external disk attached to your PC?  Does the PC see it as just another disk drive, connected via Windows? 
    OR is there something special about that disk, such as it's actually a networked drive?
    AND, what's the exact keystroke sequence that you execute to perform that backup? Because, originally, you stated "Unable to write to disk" and now you're saying "cannot backup to external disk" ... which are slightly different issues.

    yeah - always good to start with the basic questions...
    What version of Quicken - Help --> About Quicken
    Does the PC display the external drive as a drive letter .... D: E: etc
    How are you attempting to create this backup file ...
    using Quicken Backup menus or via the Windows File Copy command
    Quicken 2020 Deluxe - Subscription - Windows 10
