Long category names on Quicken Mobile! [5 Merged]

We get slowed down tremendously in Quicken Mobile because the categories don't display as "long categories" (e.g. "Personal:Dining", "Work:Dining", "Misc:Dining", etc.).

The categories only display as "short categories" (e.g. "Dining", "Dining", "Dining").

So we're constantly slowed down, trying to check if we've got the ACCURATE category & subcategory assigned to each new transaction.

This takes an incredibly long time, and is very frustrating.

Please give us "long categories" on Quicken Mobile!

Thank you! :)

The mobile app is generally used with a Quicken desktop app. Because of this connection, to the greatest extent possible the mobile app should use the same conventions as the desktop.

It doesn't do this for categories. In the desktop app, categories are always displayed as, e.g., Auto:Misc, Household:Misc, Medical:Misc, and so on. The mobile app does not use this convention, it just displays Misc, leaving me to guess which major category this transaction is in.

Like the desktop, the mobile app should always display the full category name and should allow typing in the full name as the desktop app does.

Interesting enough Quicken Web has an option to display it either way.  Quicken mobile doesn't have any of the options that Quicken Web has.

How do we see long category names on the iPhone?

We're using Quicken Mobile for the iPhone, and when we're viewing transactions or entering brand new transactions, it only shows us the short category names (e.g. "Dining") instead of the long category names (e.g. "Business:Dining" or "Personal:Dining").

How can we see the long category names (e.g. "Personal: Dining") at all times? We want to see long category names 100% of the time in the Mobile App.

It is very confusing to us to only see the short category names because we have the exact same subcategories (e.g. "Dining") repeated many times, but they all have different categories (e.g. "Personal", "Business", etc.)

    Thanks!

Apparently this was already implemented, according to this IDEA thread:
    https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7804049/mobile-app-should-handle-categories-like-desktop-option-for-long-name-5-legacy-votes/p1?new=1

I do not use Mobile so if you do not get a reply here, you may want to inquire with Quicken Support how to do this.To protect yourself from false Quicken contact info, also read this:

Thank you for pointing that out to me!

Wow, the Quicken Mobile team has DEFINITELY NOT implemented that in Quicken Mobile for iOS, so it's very disingenuous for them to say that in that other thread!

The long name only shows up for a split-second while you're choosing categories from the pop-up list of categories...

...but then it reverts back to the short name EVERYWHERE ELSE in the entire app.

You literally never see the long name again anywhere in the app, no matter what screen you go to and no matter what you're looking at, so it's completely & totally useless.

For example, we have all of these categories:

    Creative:Dining
    Personal:Dining
    Misc:Dining
    Work:Dining
    Travel:Dining

And guess how they all appear in Quicken Mobile?

You might want to take a look at Tags. You would create tags for Creative, Personal, Misc, Work, and Travel and then tag your Dining transactions with the appropriate tag.

I don't think I'll be able to switch over to Tags. Too much legacy information without tags. And the desktop product is cleaner without the extra column for tags. We're coming from Quicken 2007 for Mac, where we never had full Tag support before. I know that the Windows version of Quicken always had Tag support.

I hope that the Quicken Mobile team can FULLY roll this out to Quicken Mobile for iOS, because it's only PARTIALLY implemented right now.

I appreciate the issue of legacy info. BTW, in case you did not know, in QM2007, Tags are called Classes. I use them EXTENSIVELY and work great. The differences include that in QM2007 you can only have one class per line BUT you have better organization possible with sub-classes (like sub-categories). In new QMac, you can have multiple tags per line BUT you lose the organization of sub-classes. The caveat with multiple tags is you have to be careful not to create double-counting when creating reports.

Now in new QMac it might not be so difficult to update legacy info IF the batch editor worked properly. Currently, batch editing only works on transactions without splits.

So, you may want to add your VOTE to Improve Batch Editing to include changing Split transactions.

First, click on the underlined link above to go there, then click the little grey triangle under the VOTE count at the top of page 1 in the blue banner, so your vote will count for THIS feature and increase its visibility to the developers by seeking to have the features you need or desire end up in the latest version (it may take a moment for your vote to register).

    Your VOTES matter!

Very high interest from me! The mobile app is extremely difficult to use without this feature!

Seems to be a needed function. I was noticing yesterday, that the categories were displayed incomplete as mentioned in this post.  And I was using some of the default categories that are organized into subgroups. It is primarily a concern for subgroups.
