After last update Quicken crashes when backing up

I have Quicken Deluxe for Windows R26.21 Build 27.1.26.21

Since the last update was applied whenever I backup to my network drive Quicken crashes with a BugSplat, which I have filled out and sent more than once.

Thanks for the reply. If there is a data file problem it was most certainly introduced by a Quicken update. There is no way that I am going to now restore to a now out of date back-up and lose some recent work unless I absolutely have to. The test file is a good idea though that I will try out first.

I suggest you attempt to reinstall Quicken: download and open https://download.quicken.com/windows/Quicken.exe

Uninstalled. Re-install took 2 attempts. First install failed and I manually deleted install folder and retried. After successful install the program crashes shortly after opening.

By far Quicken is the buggiest software that I've ever paid money for.

If you didn't perform a clean uninstall after the install failed, I suggest you perform a clean uninstall, and the install and update.  To perform the clean uninstall, follow the Quicken 2017 instructions at: https://www.quicken.com/support/using-qcleanui-uninstall-quicken  To install and update Quicken, download and open: https://download.quicken.com/windows/Quicken.exe

    Update:
I found out that you can start Quicken without opening a data file by holding down the Ctrl key and I was able to launch the program. Then after going through the Quicken sign-in process the program allowed me to open my data file. I then attempted a backup which was successful. So I guess that means it is working again. All of these mysterious fixes does not instill a lot of confidence in the application though.

I can’t open my data file. It crashes all the time. Any suggestions.

Re-installing Quicken seemed to work for me. Might be worth a try.

Ha Ha backup is Splatting again today. I would also be willing to bet any error reports sent via the BugSplat tool are ignored.

I've experienced the same problems since the last update. I tried to use an older data file from before the problem started and after a couple of program closings the Splat is back. I haven't tried the reinstall, but it looks like it didn't work. I'm hoping there will be a follow up update to correct the issue. Quicken must know there is a problem.

Sorry to hear that you are also having the problem. I guess it's good to know that it's just not me or you alone. I was contemplating chatting with Quicken support today but I fear that might be a big time sink as their script will run through a bunch of things I have already tried.

I too have been experiencing Bug Splat when I do manual backups or automatic (upon closing Quicken) backups.  I never had this problem until I installed R26.21 Build 27.1.26.21 a few days ago.

    Please FIX ASAP!

FYI There is a new update available and here are the release notes. Looks like the dev team realized they broke something.

    Quicken 2020 R26.23 Release Notes
    · Fixed: Issues involving occasional crashes during sync or when closing the program.
    · Fixed: Issue with Wells Fargo that prevented persistent connections.

I Have performed a couple of backups and no crashes so far.

This is the sort of bug that should have been fixed immediately!  Is anybody at Quicken paying attention?  Do you perhaps need help fixing it?

Totally! As a software developer myself I would be embarrassed at these types of bugs reaching production. It screams poor quality control processes.

What is the proper procedure for backing up to the preceding release?

Do you mean reverting the software to a previous build release? No idea, not even sure if it is possible as updates are all downloaded and applied via the software. You'd have to get a hold of an installer .exe or .msi that has the version you are looking for packaged up. Who knows how often Quicken updates those installer packages.

There is a new patch out that says it fixes some crashes, you should try installing it:

I installed R26.23 Build 27.1.26.23 and it hasn't Bug Splatted after two Manual backups and 1 Automatic backup.  Here's hoping!

To revert to an older version you need to save the old patch installs and to apply the one you want.

You can find the old patch installs on my website (Quicken Inc isn't going to save them for you).

Thanks Chris_QPW. I would also exercise caution if installing previous releases as there is always the potential of data format changes that would not be reverted and could potentially leave things in a bad state.

To revert to an earlier release, I suggest you perform a clean uninstall, install while disconnected from the internet, update by applying the appropriate Mondo Patch, and restoring a data file saved prior to updating from the earlier patch release.  If you haven’t already, you may want to review: https://www.quicken.com/support/using-qcleanui-uninstall-quicken. To update Quicken, I recommend you download and apply the appropriate Mondo Patch: https://www.quicken.com/support/patching-updates-windows or http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quickenpatches.html

To prevent Quicken from applying an update without your approval, I suggest you set Windows UAC settings appropriately (choose default or always notify).

Good advice, but for the most part you should be OK.  Quicken Inc has been keeping the data file compatible all the way back to Quicken 2016.

But what tends to cause more problems are the configuration files.  In fact what strange things happen that seems like the program is at fault the general procedures is first try the Mondo patch install because it will overwrite all the program files without looking at the version number just in case a file has gotten corrupted.

On the other hand the configuration files aren't touched and sometime the problem is in them and that is why the next level of suggestion goes to getting rid of them to get a clean uninstall.  As documented in this article.
