One-Step Update merging information from separate files

I maintain separate files: one for my own personal and business finances, and a separate file in which I track my elderly parent's accounts. I have run this setup without issue for more than five years without problems.

Since the last software update, one-step update adds accounts from one file to the other. Such as, suddenly my personal bank accounts are in the file containing my parent's finances, or my parent's accounts are suddenly added to mine.

I do not use Quicken Cloud, or Quicken mobile, at all. Strictly local files, with updates downloaded from time to time from the various financial institutions.

This does not happen every time, but does happen more than half of the time. The only way to restore order is to restore from a backup.

Version R29.22
Build 27.1.29.22

Any suggestions appreciated.

How were the separate files created?  Unless each file was created using File > New Quicken File..., the files will share a common internal file identifier.  Even when we disable sync and do not have any accounts set to sync, Quicken does synchronize some state between the file and the Quicken Cloud.  I suspect the issue you're experiencing may be related to the recent switch to QCS.  Do the problematic accounts use the Express Web Connect connection method?  Are there reminders associated with online bills?

    Hi @PCoppinger

Did you originally have one file with both sets of accounts and related data in that one Quicken QDF file?  And then later, did you perhaps copy that file, rename the copied file, and the delete certain accounts/registers from each, such that you ended up with two QDF Files, each with the accounts for you and your parents? If so, that could be the cause of your problems.

Let us know and we can go from there.

    Frankx

No, there was not an original file with both sets. I believe that the second file was indeed created by duplicating the first, deleting accounts/registers, and adding new ones, probably to preserve the layout and interface of the first.

The easiest way to break the linkage between two versions of the file is to associate distinct Quicken Ids with each file.  This means paying for additional subscriptions and signing in more frequently if you're still using Online Services with both files.

The other approach is to create new Quicken files and import the data.  You should be able to use QXF files for everything but the investment accounts.  For the investment accounts, you should be able to use QIF files.  If you haven't already, you may want to review:

Thanks, this is quite helpful. I appreciate the advice. I am still grumpy about the switch to subscription, and refuse to run two. But I will restart the file from scratch.
