Why would Quicken incorrectly add up my list of checks / debits?

My reconciliation is off by $500 and I couldn't find the error even after going through my statement line by line. I keyed in the amounts into Excel and noticed that I had 51 transactions even though Quicken showed 50. I reset the register and tried again. It then showed 51 transactions but the list of checks / debit transactions looked the same. The total shown in Quicken is $500 less than the total of the statement (I double checked in Excel). I then manually added up the transactions in the reconciliation window and it's off by $500!. Has anyone got a suggestion as to why the sum of the checks / debits displayed in Quicken is incorrect?

You might go way back and check the opening balance to be sure it is still shown correctly. I have seen a few posts where round dollar amounts were traced back to some change that had occurred in a old transaction like that.Quicken user since 1995

Summarizing the FAQ from memory:
There is a reconcile bug in which one or more transactions included in the reconcile are not displayed in the reconcile window. One way of resolving the issue is to temporarily reset the transaction or posting dates of the missing transactions so that the transactions are not straddling the statement end date.0 -
I experienced this problem myself, and in fact it does help to just toggle the date of the missing transaction by +/-1 day, restart the reconcile, clear the transaction, and then you can set the date of the transaction back to the correct date.1
