can't answer your question for a MAC, but in Windows version I use the RNTCAP transaction type, but use a negative number to add to cost basis. And create a misc exp / inc transaction to 'write off' the cash that the 1st transaction creates0

Hello @DFHarwood
Thank you for taking the time to visit the Community to report this issue. I'll need a bit more information to be able to assist.
First, please navigate to Quicken > About Quicken and provide the release that you are currently running.
May I ask that you provide a few more details on what occurred that has caused the cost basis to be missing? This may help in determining which type of transactions to use to get you the information that you need.
Last, are the transactions for this brokerage account downloaded automatically or tracked manually? The more information you can provide regarding this issue will help the Community to better understand and assist.
Thank you,
-Quicken Tyka
