Trying to relink credit union account, but it brings in many years of duplicate transactions.

I am using a backup and cleaned it up but can't get the relink efforts to stop bringing in years (to 2004) of duplicate transactions. Tried to run yearend process and it did not work either.

The dups should be a one time event after reverting to a restore of a backup file.
See this FAQ on a proven way to deal with this: FAQ - Download old transactions

The problem with the old transactions (from 2004 and forward) is it puts them directly in the register and posts them. No way to identify them.

You have to turn off "auto accept" of imported transactions in Preferences.

Another way to "identify" the transactions is to sort by "Order Entered".

That will put the downloaded transactions at the bottom of the register.
Also as an aid, before doing the download, put a memo in the last transaction so that you can quickly find it.

I have been a Quicken user since its inception. Since going to the Subscription version, I have had nothing but problems. Support is essentially non existent. With my unresolved issues I am looking for something else, Quicken is no longer quick or convenient.

    There is a misconception here.

When you first connect to a financial institution all the transactions are put directly into the register no matter if you have automatic transaction entry mode on or not.  What's more there isn't any kind of status with them.

I believe the only way you can separate them out is by sorting by Order Entered.
