Adding older transactions?

I'm a first-time Quicken user, just downloaded the Mac version and successfully linked to my bank (Vancity). Automatically imported transactions only go back three months on my checking account and 6 months on my Visa card. I tried importing a QFX file with the older credit card transactions, but it created a new account instead of adding the transactions to my existing account. What do I need to do differently?

That's fine if it created a new account. That happens sometimes. Just select all the missing transactions  and drag and drop them into the primary account. Then you can delete the newly created account.
