Offsetting Entries

I purchased an item for a friend in US dollars. Later he did lots of work for me which I entered as a negative in the same category as the item with the work items as positive causing an almost zero entry. However, in the budget analysis both the original item and the offsetting item entered as a positive value both show up as positive showing a large incorrect amount spent.

    Please explain precisely how you entered the offsetting entries because you spent cash from a register and did not receive cash back.  To balance the offset entries would require another category.
