Does Quicken use any hierarchy across Categories, Tags and Memos when creating reports?

edited December 2023 in Reports (Windows)

When modifying canned reports (Income & Expense), I need to separate individual events (Memo), while still keeping them lumped by year (Tag) and the actual event (Category). What I am ending up with is everything with a "2023" year Tag on the same report. The Memo entry does not seem to be used by Quicken in its reports. If the Category is anything and the Tag is "2023" then it ends up on the report. Example:

Category - Campouts

Tag - 2023

Memo - Devil's Lake

Every campout in 2023 shows up on the report in spite of the Memo box having different campout names (Devil's Lake, Campsgiving, Shawnee Trek, etc.). What am I missing? Thanks.

There currently is a problem with memos in reports. Don't know if it's only Windows or for Mac too. There are several posts about it. Can't find a link right now.

I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

Enter Devil's Lake in the Memo contains box in the report customization, then when the report is displayed, click on Memo in the header. This would normally sort the report by Memo. For some reason, the filter does not work unless the report is sorted by Memo.

For a lot more information, see this lengthy discussion on the current QWin bug with filtering by Memo. Hopefully Quicken will fix this soon.

Interesting to know. I have a 2016 desktop version that doesn't seem to have the same issue as the current subscription version does.

EDIT forum removed spaces tabs changed to arrows.

Memos have never been part of Quicken's "hierarchy". They are simply a field in the transaction.

The bug that @volvogirl is referring to is just "filtering by memo", which has nothing to do with the hierarchy. It has to do with putting in some text in the reports memo text box for filtering out only transactions that have that memo text in them.

In there isn't a hierarchy relationship between the categories and tags, because tags aren't hierarchal or directly connected to categories.

When I hear hierarchy this is what I think of:

    Auto

    —>Service

    —>Gas

This is true of categories, but nothing else, not even tags let alone memos.

You can't do this with tags:

    Apartment

    —>10343 St.

    —>34343 Ave.

When looking at this in the category fields you might be fooled into believing that the tags have a hierarchy, but they don't.

In the category field this is one category:

    Auto:Gas

In the tag field this is two tags that just happen to be on the same transaction:

    Joe:Jim

If in the report I select to show all transactions with tag Joe, then I will get all the transactions tagged like above, but I will also get the ones that only have Joe, and it would also include Joe:Mary, …

@JFPhelan Are you using Quicken Mac or Quicken Windows? This was posted in a Quicken Mac section of the forum, but we can have a moderator move it if you confirm you're using Quicken Windows as shown in your profile.

Sorry. New to the neighborhood. Didn't realize there were separate forums for Win and Mac. I us the Windows versions of Quicken. Please move this post/thread over. Thanks and sorry about the confusion.

Thanks, Jim. I have a lot to learn. I suspect I missed something in an update, as my reports initially worked as needed. Then within the last couple of weeks, all reports pull all, regardless of Memo notation. I'll keep working on it. I appreciate the help.

As mentioned before in another couple of the comments, there was a bug introduced in Quicken recently that broke the memo filtering.
