Ideas for investment account data entry

I'm using an older version of Quicken Windows so not sure if would apply, but here goes.

  1. When entering some transactions such as dividends, interest, etc, it would be good for Q to do a 'background' check and make sure that I CURRENTLY own the security. It may be in my security list but I may not actually hold any at the moment.

2. This should also be checked when entering sell transactions to avoid selecting the wrong security. I have an account that has two securities with long but different names, and have several times selected the wrong one. I've never owned them AT THE SAME TIME but have often recorded an incorrect transaction due to selecting the wrong one from the list. And further, if the sell is for more shares than I own, a warning would be nice.

    Three situations come to mind that I have seen over the years where I have wanted a transaction applied to a security even though I did not own the security at the time.

    1. I sold the security after the ex-dividend date. Thus I correctly received the dividend a few days after I had sold off the security.
    2. Some extended period after the sale, I received a litigation payout related to my prior ownership. I chose to record such transaction as a MiscInc transaction including the security name.
    3. I believe a very few times, I have entered a Stock-Split transaction in an account even though I did not have shares at the time so that I could properly monitor the price history of the security over time.

    I would go along with a warning for such a situation - transaction involving non-held security in that account - but the transaction should not be categorically rejected. Probably good to have that warning process user-controlled.

    re: long security names — you can rename the security (edit security details) any way you wish, such as putting the ticker at the front of the name, or otherwise making the early parts of the security names clearly distinguishable.
