I like this idea, but not if it prompts each time a category tag, account or security is added. Imagine I'm entering a transaction and realize I should have a new category or sub-category, so I create it while entering the transaction. If I have 50 saved reports, and half of them are set to use selected categories and need to prompt me whether to update that report, it would be very frustrating. But if a warning popped up when I open a saved report to let me know new categories have been added since the report was saved, that would be helpful and not intrusive.

And there's a related loophole which should be closed.

Create a report set to all categories ("include transactions with any category") and save it
Add a new category, and add a transaction using this category.
Open the save report and note that it still shows it is set to "include transactions with any category"
Open the report, and note that it includes the new category
Edit the report and click to change Categories to "include only transactions with selected categories"
Observe that all categories* are checked except the new category; it must be manually checked to include it. (*except a few special investment categories which are not used in transaction reports)

The behavior I'd expect is that when I switch from all categories to selected categories, it would default to all categories being checked, allowing the user to de-select any they now want to omit. I would not expect to find some categories unchecked after switching from all categories.

In Quicken Windows, these advanced options are only available when the user saves a custom report. It usually only chosen once when the report is initially created, but can be changed anytime when explicitly saving the custom report. Here is the full "Save" dialog box -

@jacobs in Quicken Windows it works as you described; it prompts you when you open a saved report. Note that it will keep prompting you each time you open it until you save the report again.

This is the prompt.

I sort of feel that if I selected "View the report as I saved it." I shouldn't have to manually save the report again to not have the prompt come up next time, but I guess they save this information in the report itself and don't want to save it automatically. With "View the report as I saved it." it just goes directly into the report.

With the "Show the Customize Report window…" you get this:

Which is to say it takes you to the Customize dialog with the Category tab selected and only showing just the new category(s).
