Can I restrict the auto population of category and memo fields to only when I manually enter transac

Long time quicken user and this has bugged me forever.  When I am manually entering transation, I love the fact that Quicken auto fills in my category and memo fields based on past history. when I am downloading transations, I hate this feature. Is there anyway to enable this feature for manual entry but not for downloading transactions?

I use the quickfill tab under perferences, and believe it is the "complete fields using previous entries" that enables this.

I am using quicken 2009 with Windows

Are you manually entering your transactions prior to downloading from your FI?  If so, this shouldn't be a problem with any of the downloaded transactions, because they will "Match" your correctly entered transactions.

Here's a short excerpt from Quicken Help.  "After you update transactions and balances for your account, Quicken uses a matching process called compare to register to determine whether a downloaded transaction is new or has already been entered into the register manually. This process is flexible and allows you to choose the degree of control that's right for your situation."  Read more about this process in Quicken Help.  Use "matching cash flow transactions" without the quotes for your search term.

My issue is not about matching manually entered transations to downloaded transactions. My issue is when I download transactions that have not been manually entered, I do not want Quicken to autofill the memo and categories.  But I do want quicken to autofill the memo and categories if I am manually typing in transactions.
    Advice?

I wonder if right before you download you can uncheck the auto-fill under preferences and then when you're done turn it back on?

Can you explain why you want a different category for the same payee depending on whether the transaction was downloaded or manually entered?

Not sure why that is relevant to the problem, but....
    1) Memo field is different for every transaction as I use it to track things specfici to that purchase.  There is no way to decouple memo from category for quick fill
    2) When  I download, there can be 100+ transactions downloaded. I like to review each one before categorizing. If they get auto categorized, then it is hard to differentiate what I have reviewed and what I have not reviewed.
    3) There are occassions where I want different categories for the same store -  a purcase at costco, for instance, may have groceries, plus clothes.

    Thanks

1.)  If the memo is going to be different for every transaction, why wouldn't it be different for every manually entered transaction. And if the memo should be different (meaning QuickFill doesn't help for the memo), then leave the Memorized memo field blank.

2.) You can Accept each downloaded transaction individually. And as you select each downloaded transaction in the "Accept transactions ..." window to accept it, you can see exactly what category QuickFill will apply (the selected transaction will appear highlighted in the register), and you can change that category before Accepting, if you wish.

3.) When you use different categories for the same payee, you have to begin to think about whether a memorized category is a benefit. If it isn't a benefit, it's hard to see why it would help when manually entering transactions, but hinder when accepting downloaded transactions.

I have several payees that use different categories for different transactions ... I don't use memorized transactions for those payees, I use the Address Book to quickfill just the payee name, then manually assign the category.
