category expense or income

When I enter a new transaction in a cash account and split the category into subcategories, it doesn't enter the amount as appropriate income or expense items as designated when the subcategory was defined.  I have to manually enter the amount as a credit or debit.  Why doesn't it treat the amount entered as income or expense as defined in the subcategory?

    Quicken lets you have the amount for a transaction be negative or positive regardless of whether the category is an income or expense category.
