Transaction file is full

What is the best strategy to get Quicken working when you can't enter any transactions? I have been using this product since the early 90's and have come to the end of endless transactions I guess. I have read the few comments online, but no official statement or info from intuit. I thought I would be able to see my enter financial life, once I began using quicken, but I guess it isn't infinite.

So now what do I do. Archive(don't know how to do that) and delete old accounts to free up space?

I'm working in the patched together Mac Lion version 2007, so I am not holding my breath for an Intuit update anytime soon.

Any suggestions from someone who has had to do this would be appreciated.

Thanks

    I'm only going to comment upon your subject line.  The only "transaction file" size limit in Q is the size of your hard drive ... SO, unless your harddrive is full ...
    One of the Mac experts will need to address the remainder of your issue ... but "file full" ISN'T it.

    To get any help here, you need to explain in detail what the problem is.  Stating "you can't enter any transactions" isn't descriptive enough.  What error(s) are you getting?
    I'm with NotACPA in the opinion about running out of space, that is determined by your hard drive.

    Quicken 2007 and older do have a finite limit, and you will get a warning about the transaction file being full.

    Instead of deleting accounts (which might orphan transfers), you might have better luck using the File:Save a Copy function and trim off a few earlier years. It should set up correct open balances for the new start date.

    Hmmm, something new learned today.

    10,650 is the number, across any account. It is more a limitation of that old school file structure (and we get back into the resource/data fork issues again :-(

    See this article: http://knowledgebase.quicken.com/support/help/account-transaction-issues/size-or-capacity-limitations-of-a-quicken-data-file/GEN82708.html

    The title of my post is the error message. "Transaction file is full". I followed the only thing that I found that Quicken said to do with data file issues:

    http://knowledgebase.quicken.com/support/help/backup--restore--file-issues/troubleshooting-data-file-problems--mac-/GEN82514.html

    But after following their advice, and after entering a few more transactions I got the error message again. My hard drive is not full either. I have 6GB available.  I had read in some other posts that there is a 10,000(?) item transaction limit on accounts.  Not sure if that is true. Haven't found that info on any intuit page.

    Not sure if this applies to both Mac and PC? But I don't have 512 accounts. And your link says that Transactions should be unlimited if you have enough storage.

    -------------------------------
    [In a Quicken file you can have:

    Accounts - Up to 512 accounts of each Account Type (spending, credit, investment, etc.);
    Transactions, reports, and graphs - As many as allowed by the size of your hard drive;
    Categories, subcategories, and tags - Up to 32,768 of each;
    Trackable stocks - Up to 2,000 total;
    Split lines - approximately 250 total.
    Dollar amount - A Quicken file cannot have an entry that is larger than 99,999,999.99. This includes number of positions (shares) as well as amount of dollars.
    Note: Once the limit has been reached, there is no way to decrease the limit count.  For example, deleting an account will not "free-up" the code-line occupied by that account.  This means that you cannot delete list elements and then be able to create new ones.  Your only option once the limit is reached is to start a new Quicken file, keeping the current file as an historical copy.]
    -------------------------------

    But I did try and make a copy ,like Intuit suggested, and load that, and still the same error.

    Those details are for Quicken for Windows (even if the post started QMac). Note my comments: 10,650 is the limit for QMac 2007 and older. You will have to use the Save as a Copy

    I haven't heard great things about Mac Essentials, but if I can export this old version to the new one (Intuit says I can), then it may be worth losing whatever I have in 7, just to get me back up and working again in Quicken.
