Quicken 2015 v2.1.1 for Mac changes Payee name

Unknown Member
edited August 2018 in

When downloading transaction from my bank, Quicken 2015 for Mac changes payee name as I see when I download at text CSV file as

POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DINER FISHKILL NY

to

POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN

then displays on the Payee line in the transactions view,

Red Lion

How do I get it to keep the bank's transaction payee name, and not change it to something that is not correct?

Try right clicking on the transaction and selecting Unmatch Transaction, then edit from there and delete the one you don't want. Also, in Preferences under Connected Services, uncheck the box labeled Clean Up Payees.

I found the Clean Up Payees button.
Unmatch transaction is not highlighted as available in Q2015 for mac. Edit, delete, duplicate are available, but not Unlatch traction. Inspector says matching status is "downloaded".

This does not answer my topic question, "Quicken 2015 v2.1.1 for Mac changes Payee name". It does change payee name on download even if I uncheck the box labeled Clean Up Payees.

As for the download versus CVS file, that is because the OFX protocol has a 32 char limit, hence the truncation.

You didn't mention where you are seeing the shorter "POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN" Is this if you show the FI Payee column? (That shows what the bank is presenting before renaming rules get applied.)

If you ever rename a payee, there is a checkbox that pops up that allows you "Rename all" Did you ever "rename all" so that all past (and future) instances of POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN get renamed to Red Lion?

I wish I could provide more of an answer, but these sorts of questions are difficult to answer. You have a lot of artificial intelligence like stuff getting in the way, and you aren't there with the user to see what is happening and what went on in the past.

I don't like the truncation, as you can see this only leaves 12 characters of payee identification. This is not enough for unique payee identification.

Yes, the 32 characters appear in the FI column. "POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN"

I have never renamed a payee. This is my first auto download from the bank. So I have no idea where the Red Lion came from.

I personally am not a fan of all the "auto magic" stuff. I guess it is nice when it works, but there is a training period. At this point, you can rename Red Lion to whatever you like (and use Rename all if more than one instance), and it *should* use your name for future downloads.

Also, if you turned off the clean up payees, future downloads should keep the FI Payee when downloaded. (changing that option won't alter already downloaded transactions).

The renaming is based on feedback Intuit gets from its financial services (including Mint) on how people tend to rename things.

John, thank you very much. So the Red Line Diner gets renamed to Red Lion. Who woulda thunkd?

One more question about this topic. I am going to open a new Quicken file, re-import all accounts with "clean up payees" turned off, and categorize everything. If I give "POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN" a different category than was assigned by import, and subsequently import a new transaction with "POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN" with clean up payees off, is import going to use my category, or is it going to pick it's own category?

In theory, anything you override (payee or category) should assume your changes in future downloads. (That is, if the bank presents the same unique FI Payee.)

Having said that, I am less versed in the renaming logic as I manually enter everything and let the download mark my stuff as cleared. I do know in Quicken Essentials that there was also a checkbox to auto-categorize transactions. I don't have 2015 in front of me, so I don't recall if that preference still exists.

If you have the inclination, you can run dual files for a bit: one with the renaming stuff turned on, and the other with it turned off. In either case, you are still renaming (either the Red Lion or POS PURCHASE Non-PIN RED LINE DIN). In time, as Quicken learns your reaming, you can see which works best. Or, it might not even make a difference.

A developer explained to me the logic a couple years back, and all I can say is that it actually is pretty complex.

Since you are new to 2015, some of these might help:

If anyone from Intuit is listening... It would be SO GREAT to have access to the back end of the database of transaction matching, a Match window, just like there is a Payee and Categories window. This would let us see what Quicken is doing with matches and edit them as needed. Perhaps it could be an extension of the Payee window that would show the link to FI Payee Names from regular Payee Names.

similar to the Smart Payee List in QM2007? That would make sense so you can permanently override any decisions made by Quicken.
I would add this as a feature request here:

I just did...the more that do, the more attention it is likely to get.

smayer: if you rename a payee, it will permanently override the suggested name. The Clean Up payees is useful mainly for people who download and do nothing else. If you  go through on the first few downloads and rename to your liking, those renames should stick.

I do not mean in the data, I mean permanently override the rules used to ID the data to change from the feeds. Keep in mind that the data for the same "store/vendor" can change from the same source FI. In QM2007 you can see the rules that are being applied and it gives you more control. Can you see the rules applied in QM2015?
