Moving from Quicken 2016 for Mac to 2017

QuickPeterQuickPeter Member ✭✭
Well, I've decided to upgrade from Quicken for Mac 2016 to 2017

Are there any tips from John in NC, Buddy Stewart and of course others on what I should do or not do when I carry out the upgrade (apart from not do it :-) )?

My CD from Amazon is on its way to the UK from the US - Quicken/Intuit? can't send me a copy or allow me to download to the UK apparently.

QuickPeter  (sentiment = anxious!)

Make a backup of your data file before converting. Compress a copy of the QM2016 app so you have that safely tucked away (even though it should not be deleted when you install QM2017).  When you convert your data file, it will no longer be readable by QM2016, so good to have a backup of both the file and the app.

Having said that, it really should not be a big deal. QM2017 will read your QM2016 file and convert it. I would not expect there to be any problems.

Also, while making a backup is always advised, unless you have gone tampering with your data file location, when you launch 2017, it will locate your 2016 file and make a COPY of it to convert. This new copy gets saved in the special hidden away location. You can still run 2016 and work with your old file and you can have both versions open at that same time.

Just don't try to open any of your Quicken files directly as this will cause the latest version to launch and convert. Always make sure you are pointing any dock icons to the actual application itself.

If you left the file alone, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Concordman, I'm sorry that I did not make it clearer by saying that I've already ordered it from Amazon US and they told me yesterday that it has been shipped and will be with me in about 14 days.

Which "same issues" did you mean by the way?

Amazon does offer Quicken as a download, but perhaps it didn't allow you that option since you're in the UK. You may want to look into subscribing to a VPN service. In addition to protecting the privacy of your communications, VPN will let you "spoof" your location, so that you appear to be in the U.S. when you log onto Quicken or other sites. There are many good VPN services out there. The one I use is called NordVPN.

I believe you are referring to another thread about Fi downloads. Is that correct?

Interesting Rick, what other benefits would the VPN offer a private user? Wondering if I should be looking into a VPN but was wanting to know what are the other benefits. If this question is a bit off topic , not to worry you have my permission to plead the 5th:)

Does the VPN have any impact on  direct connect with QM? Do you have to allow permission for it to pass thru the VPN?

Rick, thanks for this tip, it sounds like a very good idea. I will look into it. QuickPeter

Concordman, Rather than get too far afield from Quicken topics, I'll say that Direct Connect works fine through my NordVPN connection. The benefits, as noted above, are primarily security/privacy via end-to-end encryption, and the ability to appear to be located somewhere physically that you are not.

I'd suggest that you Google "VPN benefits". You will find many discussions.

One more thing.. while there are many free VPN options out there, it's kind of a get-what-you-pay-for situation in terms of speed and reliability.

Thx Rick, have been finding quite a bit of info on line.. The issues for me would be speed & no log tracking so I am looking into a few options

Rick, many thanks for this advice.

Re. Backup of data file - can I simply use the File/Save Backup feature in the program (top Menu bar)?

Would that backup be deleted once I install QM2017?

Now, compressing a copy of the app

Your " ... (even though it should not be deleted when you install QM2017)." is noted and reassuring.

I have no idea how to do this compressing - could you or others let me have a link on how to do this please?

I have the CD that I used to install the program, but of course there have been several updates to Q2016 since then. It's the current updated version of the app/program I want to save, right?

John, wow! That's great news that I can still run my QM2016 and work with my old data file.

I've not tampered with my data file in any way, I'm very pleased to say.

Just to be clear, when you say "this new copy"", do you mean my current QM2016 data file?

After I've installed QM2017, will I be able to just click on the (QM2016) icon in my dock to launch QM2017? That is, will the installation of the QM2017 program edit and automatically use my icon in the dock to allow me to launch /point to QM2017?

    1) Yes, you can use the save a backup feature. If you have automatic backups turned on, then that's already being done. Also, Quicken automatically makes a special backup when it upgrades the file. But just for extra protection and to be absolutely sure you have an unmodifiable backup, here's what I do when installing "major" upgrades. Find your data file in the Finder (in Quicken: menu File > Show "filename" in Finder). Then in the Finder, right click on the file and choose "Compress 'filename' ". This will make a .zip archive of the file that can't accidentally be opened in Quicken and modified. Once you're upgraded and are confident everything is working well, you can delete the .zip file.

    2) As for compressing the Quicken App, you do pretty much the same thing. Find the Quicken 2016 app in the Applications folder of the top level of your hard drive. Right click on it and choose "Compress Quicken 2016". You will see a file Quicken 2016.zip created. You now have an archive of a "frozen in time" version of QM2016. I actually do this prior to accepting any version upgrade of Quicken, just in case I find a problem with the new version and wish to easily revert to the prior version.

As stated, none of this should really necessary since QM2017 backs up your last 2016 data file and should not delete the QM2016 app. It's all just one extra precautionary layer of backup.

If you left the file alone, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

First, make sure the icon you are clicking is the application, not the data file. Apps are located to the left (or above) the divider in the dock; data files are located to the right (or below).

I'm not sure, but I think the QM2016 program icon gets replaced by the QM2017 icon in your dock. You can identify the QM2017 icon by small "17" in the lower right corner (see below). You can add the QM2016 app icon back to the dock by dragging it from the Applications folder to the dock. You will then have both versions of Quicken in your dock like this:

    image

You can click whichever (or both) you want to work with. QM2016 will open your 2016 data file and QM2017 will open your converted to 2017 data file. When you are all done with QM2016, you can drag its icon off the dock to remove it.

As John said, make sure you don't try to open your 2016 data file by double clicking it (after having installed QM2017) because QM2017 will launch and convert it.

Rick, John in NC, Concordman, and others, this is yet another holding response.

Just to let you know that my 2017 CD arrived safely from Amazon Shepherdsville KY this morning.

I'm having to pop over to Amsterdam next week for a few days so I'll commence the migration from 2016 when I get back.

RickO, Concordman, John in NC & others, I thought I'd let you know that I seem to have successfully upgraded from Quicken 2016 for Mac to 2017.
Thanks to you all for the advice and support.
No issues to report at all, it went smoothly.
I panicked just now because I could not find "Bill Reminders".
I found it in the top tabs next to "Calendars" of course.
I like that "Net Worth" figure being shown at the bottom of the main screen.
