Deluxe to Home & Business! Upgrades/Downgrades

HI, I've used Quicken since 1995 ... so, I have a lot of experience/data with this and now I'm ready for an upgrade!! Question - I'm thinking about moving this time to Home & Business from Deluxe. I'm sure this is a simple transition. But, if I find later than Home & Business isn't right for me - can I migrate back to Deluxe/Premier in later versions? Or, am I mostly locked into Home & Business from here on out. In other words, can the data eventually "downgrade" or is it best to only step 'up' and not down again?

The Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business and Rental Property Manager versions of any given year of Q are fully file-interchangeable.  If you downgrade, for example, from H&B to Deluxe your H&B specific accouints will become just regular accounts in Delxue and you'll lose all of the H&B functionality in them.  But your data will be intact.

SO, you can up/down-grade to your hearts content.

NOTE, however, that Q Starter Edition can ONLY import data files from earlier product years of Starter Edition.

    How to unlock additional features

    If you want to, you

can activate the H&B (or other higher level) features in your already

installed Deluxe software directly. There's no need to go out and buy

a new Quicken CD or download. Simply follow the instructions here:
    https://www.quicken.com/support/how-do-i-add-additional-features-quicken-2012-and-newer

It's possible that this process might not work right now, because of the separation of Quicken from Intuit Inc.
If you run into problems, contact Quicken Support and they'll provide you with the necessary information. https://www.quicken.com/support#contact-support

    The cost for this

"upgrade" should be the price difference between feature

    levels.
Please do remember to retain any emails or instructions that you receive. You

will need them again should ever have to reinstall from the original Quicken Deluxe

CD (or saved downloaded installation file) so that you can re-unlock the higher

    feature level.

Warning: Obsolete information! This does not apply to the Q 2018 and later subscription versions!

Thanks - I currently have 2014 so I need to upgrade to re-activate my online services that have expired!! Just exploring which version and thought the Home & Business would be good to manage some freelance work/business but I didn't want to be locked into that pricing in the future if it wasn't quite what I needed!

Thank you! Great to know! I think I'll give it a try - need to upgrade to regain my online access and thought I'd try the H&B edition this time to see how it worked for me.

H&B works well for freelance consulting.  I've previously run the finances for my late wife's consulting and mine (2 different businesses) in 1 H&B data file.

The primary restrictions is that H&B doesn't have a payroll function and can't handle inventory ... but if you're good with those restrictions, then H&B can work well.

To do what?  We can't unlock the higher features of Quicken H&B for you.

You need to buy the H&B edition of a newer version.

Since you are on 2010 and don't need to go online and aren't downloading any transactions or anything I would move up to the 2013 H&B version.  Because starting in 2014 they instituted an ID password you need to open your data.

I found one here for only $24,

The Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business and Rental Property Manager versions of any given year of Q are fully file-interchangeable.  If you downgrade, for example, from H&B to Deluxe your H&B specific accouints will become just regular accounts in Delxue and you'll lose all of the H&B functionality in them.  But your data will be intact.

SO, you can up/down-grade to your hearts content.

NOTE, however, that Q Starter Edition can ONLY import data files from earlier product years of Starter Edition.

Like Jeff, I've been a H & B since the mid 90's upgrading every year or 2. Question to anyone is ** I'm since retired for going on 3 years, not needing the business aspect of H & B, how low a version of Quicken can I go to keep functionality with me (although not needing editing) but use Quicken for all Home functions from here on?? This would possibly only doing an upgrade every 3 years or so? You can certainly see the $$$ savings here.

Your plan sounds good IF you do not use any of the online banking features (transaction download, etc) because they cease to function when the subscription expires, so going 3 years between upgrades is no longer possible.

Currently, when the subscription expires, there is an irksome side banner displayed that chews up screen space.

    image

Haven't heard anyone state that they like the side panel yet, you need to complain to Quicken at https://www.quicken.com/about-us, there is a Get in Touch button near the bottom of that webpage.

To answer steven shear's specific question ...
The lowest edition (feature level) that you can downgrade to is Quicken Deluxe.
As mentioned earlier in this discussion thread, Starter Edition will not work for you as it will not read your higher feature level data file.

Actually, Starter edition was changed so that now it can read HBR data BUT you will need to maintain annual subscription if you do not want ALL your data file to become read-only when it expires. Only Deluxe or "higher" allows you to continue to edit your data even after the expiration. You simply lose online functionality.

As for the side banner, also add your VOTE to
QWin 2017-CA/QWin & QMac 2018–Quicken Inc should eliminate or at least minimize the LARGE Advertising space used when a subscription expires

First, click on the underlined link above to go there, then click VOTE at the top of THAT page, so your will vote count for THIS feature and increase its visibility to the developers by seeking to have the features you need or desire end up in the latest version.

    Your VOTES matter!

So I have Premier now and my subscription expires in a week. I decided that Deluxe is all I need so I bought a new license for that. What will happen when I try to apply it while my current license is valid? I'm thinking I should wait for my Premier license to expirate and then use the Deluxe key.
