Do Not Show Zero-Balance Accounts in Reports (5 Merged Votes)

I want to generate reports that automatically exclude accounts with zero balances. I've been to the live chat for help, but found that this option is not currently available; accounts need to be selected individually. Will Quicken please make the option "do not display accounts with zero balances" available for reports in the future? I am currently using Windows 2017 Deluxe, Version R15 Build 26.1.15.2. Thank you.

    If these are zero because they're no longer active accounts then hide them.

    The accounts are already hidden in the account list but still show up in reports.

    In the pop-up where you can select the accounts and categories, click on Advanced. In the pull-down menu for Transactions>Amounts, select Greater Than; in the next field, enter 0.

    This is for a Payee Report, but I think it will work for others too.

    Agree that this should be an option without having to go by individual account, assuming that will work.

    Because accounts  may be relevant for a Net Worth Report 4 years ago, for instance, but closed and zeroed out today.  If you want to compare Net Worth from those two time frames, it appears you have to include all accounts that were live at either point in time and the Report will include zero balance lines - very frustrating!

    • Click the gear at the top right of the report
    • On the Accounts tab, uncheck the accounts you do not want included in the report
    • Click OK

    It does seem like an option to omit Accounts with zero balances would be useful.  If I can I try to keep my balance sheet short enough to print out on one page and having to go through and delete $0 Accounts - and then remembering to put them back once they have a balance - is the kind of a chore the computer program should be good at.

    I know some users may look at only a one column (current balance) Networth Report, but once you add "over time", then all of the accounts need to be displayed.
    Jim Harman's suggestion to customize and save the report seems like the best since the "zero amount" accounts don't change much in the near term, just over a period of years.

    I have a number of accounts that, over 25 years of using Q, have been zeroed out and closed.
    SO, if I produce say a Net Worth report over multiple years, there will be multiple account that once had balances, but no longer.
    Yet if I customize the report to a shorter time period, many of those accounts will now be $0.
    SO, this option needs to be formulated so that the $0 accounts are suppressed only if ALL columns in the particular report show $0 for the account.
    In other database report writers (thinking of "R&R Relational Report Writer", which was a dBase companion product) this "don't display $0" was a standard feature back in the mid-1980's.
    SURELY this feature can be incorporated into Q's report writer function.

    To build on @NotACPA's comments,

    Note also that some reports (Itemized Categories for example) already suppress lines with zeros, but they may do that by filtering lines with no transactions rather than ones with all zeros.

    Some users have asked that there be a way to force those reports to include the lines with zeros to make them easier to compare to earlier printed reports, so making the zero line suppression a user settable option rather than automatic would help those users as well.

    I certainly agree that changes like this might cause more confusion than benefit and would require extensive testing to make sure they do not break something else or introduce undesirable side effects.

    Fixing errors in the reports is more important than trying to improve them.

    Another way to get the printout you want would be to export the report to Excel then filter to eliminate the lines with zeros

    I agree that there should be an option to eliminate zero balance accounts in reports - particularly net worth report.

    Would you have it exclude accounts that are zero at the end of the reporting period, or those that have been zero for the entire reporting period?

    It seems only the latter makes sense.

    Note that if you have accounts that you want to exclude from reports and other Quicken features by default, you can go to Account Details > Display Options and mark them as Separate.

    In the Customize tool/popup, you can select the Accounts tab. You can select/deselect individual accounts, which is nice, but I would like to have a checkbox to exclude all accounts with zero balances. I realize I can "close" these, but prefer not to until at least a year goes by.

    The same feature would be good for the Securities tab.

    Zero Balance Option


    I am often exporting balance related reports to Excel (e.g. Account Balance; Net Worth). There are numerous accounts with zero balance - most often due to the account being closed.

    I'd like the ability to have a report option that allows me to filter out those accounts with a zero balance.

    This feature is not unique to your Windows product. However, that is the version I use.

    You can customize any of the reports to exclude accounts you do not want to see.

    There are pros and cons to a feature like this and it is not clear exactly how it should work. See this Idea:

    The suggestion to customize the report to manually exclude specific accounts does not satisfy the intent of this idea.
    The idea is to have a check box to "Exclude zero-balance accounts."
    This is perhaps going to be most useful with open, active accounts that frequently revert to zero balances, such as credit cards and lines of credit.
    I disagree with the suggestion that this should be done manually and I have voted for this idea.
    Quicken user since version 2 for DOS, now using QWin Premier Subscription on Win10 Pro.

    I have been a quicken user since 1990, filtering on $0 balances used to be available in older revisions of Quicken; why they have removed it is unfortunate and unknown. It should be a very easy thing to add.
    Quicken is supposed to make our accounting, planning and reporting easier. Export to Excel to solve a simple thing is ridiculous suggestion.
    manually removing the accounts to report on is also a tedious effort that begs for mistakes/errors by the user, when something as easy as filtering out 0 balances from a report is so easy for a computer.

    INTUIT, just add it back in. We pay your fees every 3 years for upgrades and NO improvements...

    If you want this "exclude zero balances" feature, make sure you upvote in the blue box at the top of this thread.

    I see a lot of people are saying they want this, but they're not pushing the "vote" button.
