Quicken 2000 UK - Can't register and still can't restore backup
Well we are a few month on since I posted last.
So I turns out that is was Quicken 2000 that I was trying to get started on the clients computer.
His XP machine motherboard died. I rebuilt his machine but his hard drive then collapsed after. I had to reformat this computer and start again.
I found a set of original files and managed once I installed the software with the CD to copy the original folder over the top and it put his password back on like nothing happened.
However there has been another set of problems since this.
Thank you for your help in advance

So I turns out that is was Quicken 2000 that I was trying to get started on the clients computer.
His XP machine motherboard died. I rebuilt his machine but his hard drive then collapsed after. I had to reformat this computer and start again.
I found a set of original files and managed once I installed the software with the CD to copy the original folder over the top and it put his password back on like nothing happened.
However there has been another set of problems since this.
- The original file only contained his accounts up to 2006, the last file on record was the 17th of October 2016. We found his original backup files in a folder on his computer in his Documents. When I try to restore then it says that there is 39 paths and it is impossible to restore it. Its on Windows Xp C:Documents and Settings, (user), Documents, Finance, Backup. However if you try to move the Backup folder to anywhere else it says it can't restore the files because the files are corrupted. So I have no idea how to solve this to get his original data loaded.
- The next problem is the software keeps saying to register it and it will run out after so many times. The computer is not connected to the net. We have his original customer number so we selected Telephone and put it in which the system says is invalid and will not take it. The suggestions on how to bypass the registration process do not work on his computer. So I have no idea how to solve this. The system ran out of times and now refuses to load any of his files at all. - is there an admin customer code we could use to get his software up and running? I have a scanned copy of his original invoice for his 2000 software which may still be on record proving that his software is all paid for.
Thank you for your help in advance
Jenny

Please clarify when mentioning "copy" or "restore" -
if you are referring to the XP File commands, or the Quicken File Menu commands.
Also - when mentioning "files" - vs "folders" -
do you mean the Quicken QDF type files, or copying something else.
Would think the steps would be .....
- RE-create the XP system
- RE-install the Quicken program from the orig media
- open the Quicken program - and see if it works - create new test file
- open the users Quicken file - and see if it works... which I think you were able to do
- find the other "backup" Quicken files.... as shown below - (these are from current 2018 Quicken)
- it is a collection of several related files - ALL need to be together.... you should be able to see the actual names in your "test" Quicken file folder - or the users Quicken file folder that works.
(BTW - when we say Quicken "file" - it is the logical collection of these several files listed)
1) Bypass registration (Quicken for Windows 2014 and
older)
If all else fails
and you get stuck on a Registration window, you can try the following to bypass
registration:
Start or restart
2) If that doesn't work ...Quicken. Do not start a One Step Update or any other download
activity.
Press and hold and keep holding both the left CTRL and Shift keys while you
click Tools and then One Step Update. When the message “You will no longer be
prompted for registration” appears, click OK.
How about taking the first step in the following instructions and upgrading Quicken to version 2004. That should get you out of the "must register" hole. The free version 2004 does not require registration.
http://www.quicken.com/support/how-and-when-use-intermediate-version-convert-older-versions-quicken
At some point in time, before the current system is about to break again, you need to consider performing the remaining steps of the above conversion process, to get to at least version 2010 (also available for free without registration) which will run on Windows 10 and allow you to purchase and install the most recent version of Quicken and convert your data file(s).We are based in the Uk and are using a UK version as far as I am aware.
I have asked my client to upgrade and move away from the old 2000 series but he refuses. He likes to have his "Own" version which he is used too. So I am having to work what I have which is why I was trying to see if there was an admin customer number we could use to register the product since his isn't now valid.
We can press the Shift and Ctrl keys and Tools or Online or Help (I can't remember which is there) but there isn't a One Step Update Button. So I am not sure how to bypass the registration without it.
When I first posted we literally only had the QDF files. There was no other files to choose from. It said that the files couldn't be restored as the data was corrupted and gave us an error notepad thing saying a header was missing.
Then the client remembered that he used to save the files somewhere else. In his Documents/Finance folder. I found a backup folder in there for Quicken with all the files listed on your attachment. Mainly .QEL .QPH .QTX files were found with the QDF file. So I tried to restore it from the Documents/Finance/Backup folder where it says something about the path being too long.
So I moved the Documents/Finance/Backup folder to his backup drive meaning it was just D:Backup. However the restore says that the files are corrupt because of a missing header.
I will see if I can get the software rebooted again and then try and get it going with the instructions above. Thank you

Do you have a solution?
All the files are there it just doesn't load them.
I have the feeling that you're dead in the water with that old, unsupported UK version of yours. The registration system has been retired many years ago.
The only thing you can try is to download and install Quicken US 2004 and see if it will convert your data file ... it may, it may not ... the link is in my original response (above).
If it works, continue on to the free Q 2013 US.
If it doesn't: Purchase and install the Canadian version of Q 2018/19 ("subscription version") because it's closer to the UK Tax system than the US version is. Start with a new Quicken data file as of 12/31/2018.
Isn't there any "Quicken-like" software available from other vendors, specifically written for the UK (and/or EU) market, with all the bells and whistles you might want?
Scratch the above. I just reread your prior posts. If your client refuses to upgrade to a newer version of Quicken, for free, there's nothing you can do. You're just wasting your time.
So in case you succeed in convincing the user, here is some info on how to get there:

If it is important enough to me - like Quicken - then I will stay semi-current, pay the cost, and reap the rewards of having the use of the software. For the OS, I've been forced from Win95 up and beyond due to the Quicken installer being coded to not install on older unsupported OS systems.
SO - for Qucken - where I totally depend upon the daily downloading of investment quotes & other financial transactions, I paid the cost of previous 3-year upgrades, and now will pay the yearly subscription. And for my MS Windows - I have upgraded from XP to Win10 when it was being pushed in the last couple of years.... skipped Win 8 -
In my mind if a person is depending upon Quicken for their financial recording keeping,
and using a computer system that is not current and totally updated, and also backed up in a very specific manner - they are being foolish - and personally I would walk away vs more shovel digging
