Can't Merge Categories or Sub-Categories in Quicken Premier for Mac 2019

Unknown Member
There is not a tool or method for merging of two categories.  The method of renaming and getting a popup does not work for combining categories with a specific subcategory.

It can be done, but can you be a bit more specific about what you're trying to merge. A concrete example would be very helpful.

For example, let's say (part of) your category list looks like this:

    Auto
       Fuel
       Repair
       Tolls
    Gas
    Groceries
    Hobbies

...and you want to merge the Auto:Fuel category with Gas. In that case, you would first rename Auto:Fuel to Auto:Gas. Then drag Auto:Gas out in between two top level categories (eg. Groceries and Hobbies). A blue line will appear indicated where you are trying to put it. When you release the mouse, you will get the popup window asking if you want to merge Gas with Gas.

Thanks for the Very Quick Reply.

When I try your solution, using Quicken for Mac Premier 2019, The category edit window will not let me type a colon into the name field.  An other character from the keyboard will type but a colon will not type.

This whole approach seems to be a work around rather than an elegant tool to merge categories from and too any level.  I would like to be able to merge top level categories into sub categories and vice-versa.

It seems that you can drag and drop to move sub categories to main level categories.  You can even select multiple categories.  How about selecting two categories and merging them with a "alternate mouse click"???  That would be an elegant solution...  Perhaps with a popup window that asks which you name you want to merge into.

Any other ideas would be welcome.  Many Thanks.

The methods are what they are. They can get pretty much anything done you need. They may not be elegant, but since this is (or should be) an infrequent task, I don't see Quicken spending scarce development resources on changing it up.

To make a subcategory, you either use the New Subcategory submenu from the bottom (+) menu or you drag a higher level category onto the one you want it to be a sub of. To bring a subcategory out to the top level, you drag it to between any two top level categories.

If you are still unable to arrange them as you desire, I will ask again... please provide a concrete example of what you're trying to do and I'll attempt to explain how to do it.

It would be nice to be able to do that, like in QM2007 but since there is a simple alternative, it may not get addressed anytime soon. That said, you can always create an IDEA thread to request that this ability be added.

Thanks for this Solution.  I have tried this method and it works just as described.

I am unable to type a Category and Sub-Category together on the name line with the colon separating them... ie. " Category:Sub-Category:Sub-Sub-Category "  But this may be a configuration problem that I have to solve.  Or... it may just not be possible.

Regardless with the tools provided your method works flawlessly.  Many Thanks.

If you are talking about entering the category:subcategory on the transaction line, do you have the Long setting enabled?

This was a great, powerful feature in the now defunct 2016 Quicken. I don't understand why it wouldn't be implemented and be given these clunky work arounds?

    Hello Alex,

To create a post for a feature request you will want to create a new idea post.
