Cannot Delete Account

Mark CarlsonMark Carlson Member ✭✭
I somehow accidentally and without being aware of it a new "Cash" account, which is an exact duplicate of my checking account. I want to delete it, but I cannot. I follow the directions for deleting an account (select the account in sidebar, under menu Accounts choose delete), but the Delete option is gray, and I cannot do it. How do I get rid of the thing? And how do you suppose I created this by accident in the first place?

What version of Quicken are you using? Mac or Windows and version and year?

I clicked "Mac" in the form through which I submitted the question. I guess it doesn't show, though, adding to my frustration.  I'm using Mac 2017.

    Thanks.

It doesn't show up in my list of Accounts when I opt for Hide and Show Accounts. So I now have two accounts called "Cash", and one of them seems to be some kind of phantom account that is impossible to get rid of or even to hide.

Yes, it shows Mac, but that's not always accurate. Needed to know the year anyway.

I'm not sure why the Delete Account menu item would be grayed out. If you open the account settings, is there an At Your Financial Institution section at the top? If so, you could try the Troubleshooting button, then Deactivate Downloads.

You could also try to see if you can rename the account. Or change the account type in the account settings and see if that has any affect.

If worse comes to worse, you could always just hide the account (menu Accounts > Hide and Show Accounts). It would still take up some space in your file, but would be gone for all practical purposes.

Thanks, RickO. I now see that the accidental Cash "account" is a subheading under banking, so I guess it's not actually an account. In other words, Banking is in boldface, and under that is Cash, also in boldface. Then under that are all of my actual banking accounts. I suppose there is a way to get rid of a subheading. I'll see if I can look it up.

OK I think I get it now. I guess it's just a new format for Quicken that I had not seen before. It never used to have the banking stuff separated into different categories. So, dang, I just wasted 30 minutes trying to figure out something that didn't need figuring out.

Ah..... I think I know what's going on... There is a group register called "Cash" that includes all cash-type accounts: basically checking and cash accounts. That group heading can be expanded and collapsed by hovering your cursor over it and clicking the little triangle that appears to its left.

If you only have one cash-type account, then it will kind of appear that you have duplicates when the Cash group is expanded.

Here's what it would look like collapsed:

Here's what it would look like expanded with one checking/cash account:

And here's what it would look like with two checking accounts:

Got it! Yes, you are absolutely right. I've never seen that before today, so either it's a new thing in some recent Quicken update, or I'm just an idiot.

    Many thanks for your help!

Yes, it's useful if you have multiple accounts in a sub category. But if you only have one, it's redundant.

If you click on the three dots (...) at the right at the top of the Account Bar, you can select "Sidebar Balance Options" and de-select Show Sub-Group Balances.

That will eliminate the amount next to the Cash Sub-Group.  Makes it look a lot cleaner and not nearly as confusing.

The three dots solves part of my similar problem, except I mistakenly imported data to the "cash" account which makes it unavailable in my regular account and cannot be transferred to my regular banking account.  So I should hide the cash and the checking account and operate with only the banking visible? That might work. But what a quicken snafu.

Have you tried simply moving the transactions from one account to another? You can do this using simple drag and drop of one or more transactions at a time (using Shift-Clicks for a range or Option-Click for specific ones).

Then be sure to deactivate your account links so that next time you import data, you can link to the correct account.

David, "Cash" in bold on the left side is not an account, so you can't have imported data into it. The bold "Cash" is an account group, the compilation of all your checking and cash accounts. If you created a cash account which shows up under the bold Cash heading, that type of account is typically used for keeping track of the cash into and out of your wallet, so it's not likely you'd have anything to import into it. If you imported transactions from, say, a checking account into an account you called David's Cash by mistake, you can select them all together and drag and drop them onto another account (such as "David's Checking") in the left sidebar.

Or perhaps we're not understanding what you're trying to describe. If you can take a screen shot of this part of your left sidebar (obscuring or omitting your account balances if you wish), that might be clarify what you're saying your issue is.
