Bulk Category Changes - Quicken Premier for Mac Version 6.0.3

This is actually quite easy. What you want to do is merge the two categories in the Categories window:

1.  Open the Categories window (menu Windows > Categories).

2. Make sure the two categories are at the same level in the hierarchy. This means both at the top level, or both subcategories of the same upper level category. If not, you can make them so by dragging and dropping.

3. Select the one of the categories and then select the other with the Command key held down so that both the categories (and only those two) are highlighted.

4. Click the Merge Categories button at the bottom. You will be shown a window like this:



It shows you how many uses of each you have and gives you the option to specify which one you want to keep after the merge.

5. Click Merge. In the above example, any transaction (including splits) that was in category Entertainment will now have category Dining. There will be 2,224 transactions that use Dining.

NOTES:

A. If the categories are not at the same level, the Merge Categories button will be grayed out.

B. The Merge button will also be grayed out if any categories are Required categories. 

C. The above assumes that both categories are already in your database and each has one or more transactions that uses each category. If not, you can delete the one that doesn't have any transactions, then rename the remaining category as you like. After renaming, you may have to drag and drop to get it at the right hierarchical level.

D. There is the ability to bulk edit the category of transaction in cases where you only want to change the category of some of your transactions. This is done using menu File > Get Info. However, a huge caveat with this is that it does not work on split lines of split transactions.
