    This is in the FAQ section of Quicken Online Help
    Can I use a retail copy of the Subscription Release of Quicken to extend my membership?
    Yes, but you can only redeem the activation code in the retail copy to extend your subscription in the last six months of your current subscription term.  Note: Activation codes expire 24 months after being generated.

    NOTE: Make sure the retail copy is not marked for New Subscribers.  If it is you can't use it to extend an existing subscription.

    @jrich75 covered the meat and potatoes of it pretty well.

    Note: An existing subscriber can become a new subscriber if:
    1. their subscription is expired over 30 days
    2. you create a new Quicken Id to register the new purchase, just don't register it before the existing subscription expires because you lose the overlapping dates (not an extension).

    I'm curious about this.  I have never seen a retailer selling a "New Subscribers" version.  Only at Quicken.com where they have ads like 40% off, which then only refers to new users.

    Where have people seen retailers selling "new users only"?

    Back in late January, Staples was selling both the DVD version and a New Subscriber download for the same discounted price.  I believe Office Depot had a similar offer.
