QW hangs when Virus & threat protection are on

I have excluded the QW app, but that does not help. If I disable Virus & threat protection, all is good.

What virus and threat software are you running?  Because previously when I ran Norton, and now with MS
Defender, I've had no such issues.

Using Windows Defender and Malware protection.
What the Malware protection (actually called Ransomware protection) does is restrict programs from accessing certain folders.  In particular it restricts access to the Documents folder, which is the default place for Quicken's data file.

So just as a test I suggest first try turning just that off.  If that works then I suggest storing your Quicken data file in a folder outside of the Documents (like C:\Quicken) folder and turning it back on and see if that works.

Is Windows Defender feature Ransomware protection enabled?
If so, you can configure it to add Quicken as an "allowed app" without turning off Ransomware protection. Perform the last step in:

  • Yeah, already did this. It didn't help. However, when I turn off Ransomeware Protection, all is good. I would prefer not to turn it completely off.

Have you tried with your data file outside of the Documents folder?

Does the last step, about whitelisting Quicken aka making it an allowed app, correctly point to the Program Files folder where Quicken is installed? The image in above article shows the default location. Your location might differ.
After making changes, did you reboot Windows?
If all else fails, please contact  Quicken Support on the phone during posted hours of operation and let them do a screen share session to review the situation on your computer, to determine the nature of the problem and to figure out how to fix it

I decided try this with a test data file I have (normally I don't keep my data file in Documents because it is a OneDrive folder and Quicken doesn't play well with such "cloud folders"), and I'm getting completely different results.

When I opened that data file in the Documents\Quicken folder it warned me that it is blocking Quicken, I didn't change anything to stop it from blocking it.

Quicken opened the data file with no problem (this was expected, the block for ransomware is suppose to be blocking writes, not reads).

Then I accepted some transactions and did an update.  I got another warning that the Quicken was blocked (I'm guessing for the writes).

At no time did Quicken hang for me.  What's more I was surprised to see that the writing of the data file wasn't really blocked!  I closed it and opened it again and the changes were still there.  What's more Quicken was able to put in the log files:

Maybe it is different because my Documents folder is in OneDrive, but you wouldn't think so.
Not much of a protection, but in any case I can't reproduce what you are seeing without even the white listing of Quicken.

  • I was actually storing it in the local documents folder connected to my profile (this still exists, if you go to "This PC", etc. However, I do have the Documents folder redirecting/sync'ing with OneDrive. I moved the data folder to an entirely new location and tried it again and it seems to work without disabling Ransomware Protection. Still strange that it works for you and not for me, even with the app being excluded or "allowed".
