search function.....

when did the search function change??  when i have the register open and i enter a category or dollar amount, the actual check register changes and the results show up there.  there isn't a separate box  that shows all of the results.  now, if i use the find function i can get the separate box that i use to get when i used the search feature.  wish it had not been changed.  more steps to go through when it use to be simple and quick.   thanks!

There are three search functions in Quicken Windows.
    • The global one at the top right of the main window.  This searches all accounts/fields and returns the search in a separate window.
    • The register search which is in the top left of the register.  This is a "filter search" as in the register is filtered to what you type in.
    • The last one is started while you are in the register, usually on a given field, Ctrl+F (Ctrl+H for find and replace), or Edit -> Find.  This brings up a dialog of what to find (deselect "Find 'Any field' by default if you want it to start with the field that you are on, and restart search, it will be the default for the next time). This has a Find button, which finds the next register entry, and Find All which brings up the results in a separate window.

I can't believe how primitive the Quicken search function still is. I have been using Quicken for many, many years, and each time a new version comes out, I hope that the search dialog will have improved. It never does. I cannot believe that it is not possible to search on multiple fields at the same time. Maybe I want to search for a specific category and a specific amount or tag at the same time. It still can't be done. This isn't that hard to program!!

Of course, it can be done.  I suggest you learn how to customize reports: https://help.quicken.com/display/WIN/Customizing+Reports

I know how to customize reports. I shouldn't have to make a report to do a (slightly more than) simple search.

And of course, we don't have to make a report to do a (slightly more than) simple search but we do need to understand the limits to the ways we may filter and sort registers.

    [Removed-Disruptive]

Filtering and sorting registers isn't going to do it either. I may not know what register the transaction(s) is in. That's the point of doing a search.

Plenty of programs have search dialogs that let you search by more than one field. Some even let you choose if the search should an 'AND' search or an 'OR' search. This is not a difficult concept.

If you don't know which non-investment register, you may use All Transactions.

Plenty of programs are not Quicken.  The point is there are a lot of ways we can search in Quicken.  It's not primitive but it may not be as flexible as other programs.
