In my version of Quicken (R40.21), the Total of selected register items is completely MIA.

The image is of full screen and, in either mode (toggle F11), there is no indication that this feature is still available. is there any way I can bring this back or will it return in future updates? This was one of the most useful tools in the program.

What I can't tell from your screenshot is if any transactions are selected.  The total is only there if you have more than one transaction selected.

That is indeed correct, I had only one item selected. Thank you!
Still, now requiring full screen to see this feature seems like an odd "fix."

It isn't that it has to be in full screen mode, it is that the window has to be large enough to display all the information.  The total for the selected items is just the first one that will go away as you reduce the size of the window.

As @Chris_QPW stated, this is a function of register width, screen resolution, display settings to make text lager or smaller, and use of View / Use large fonts. If one of the settings is out of bounds with the rest, no amount will show.
True, IMHO, the programmers should look into that and make room for the amount, regardless of window width and other factors (above).
Please don't forget that there are other ways of obtaining the results you're looking for.
One of them is the register's Mini Report. Select the category of a transaction and click the (looks like a printed graph in miniature) icon next to the category.
Same icon is also available when you click a transaction's Payee Name, for a Mini Report for this payee.
More detailed printable reports are available in the Reports menu or the Reports & Graphs Center under the heading "EasyAnswer": How much did  I spend on (category) or How much did I pay to (payee).

One of the things I think they are doing wrong here is using fixed sized blocks for each of the amounts, that are wildly bigger than they have to be.

Thanks all for the input. The irksome thing is that I have a 27" (diagonal) monitor and it was visible, regardless of the view, until the last update. I only hope they change it back.

As far as I know nothing has changed in recent updates.  What is visible isn't dependent on the size of the monitor.  It is dependent on the resolution used, and if you are using a Windows scaling factor other than 100% or using Large Fonts (which is just another way to scale the Quicken window).

With 100% Windows scaling, normal fonts, and the Account bar hidden, I can see the total down to about a screen width of 1173 pixels.
