I'm astonished at how Budgets in Q for Mac are now operating: that at the end of each month the Budget Amount gets automatically removed forever and changed into the Actual Amount spent/earned in that category.

I want to be able to look back at the prior months of the year and see how my Actual Monthly Income & Expenses measured up against my Planned Budget for that category in those prior months. Was I successful in meeting my budget or not? I don't want that information to disappear and get wiped out in an irretrievable fashion!

There must be a LOT of people that want to have the Budget Amount remain FIXED, like I'm describing! Am I right?

In fact, I can't see any reason at all why I would want the Monthly Budget Amount to change once the month is past. (There must be some reason someone thinks it's a good idea …. because that's the way Budgets has been programmed to operate.) But please don't explain this "reason" to me, because I'm not interested in having it operate that way at all: I think that method sucks. If it is such a vital need for some people to have the Budget Amount wiped out, then allow us to have a CHOICE as to which method we would like to have for ourselves by making this behavior controllable by a SETTING (or maybe a TOOGLE switch).

A BUDGET AMOUNT that disappears on you is …… well, ridiculous. Sorry to have to be so blunt!

Right now, your entire Budget Section is worthless to me!

How long is it going to take to fix this basic fundamental problem in Budgets!?! Please give me a timeframe on this. (It can't be that hard to fix.)

Feature Request: Add Optional “Future Projection” Toggle to Reports (Scheduled Transactions + Budget Data)

Summary
Please add an option within report customization that allows users to include future-dated scheduled transactions and budgeted category amounts in reports via a simple toggle (on/off). This would extend the strong capabilities of Quicken for Mac reporting to support forward-looking financial planning, not just historical analysis.

Problem / Gap
Currently, Quicken for Mac provides:

Excellent reporting for historical data

A useful projected balance view for accounts

However, there is no way to generate a report that:

Aggregates future scheduled income and expenses, including split transactions (e.g., payroll with federal tax withholding)

Summarizes forecasted totals by category, such as total federal tax withholding over a future period

Incorporates budgeted category values into report outputs

This creates a disconnect between planning tools (budget, scheduled transactions, projected balances) and reporting.

Why This Matters
A key real-world example is federal tax withholding forecasting:

Many users rely on paycheck splits to track withholding

Avoiding IRS penalties requires visibility into year-to-date + projected withholding totals

Currently, there is no straightforward way to report on this without manual work

More broadly, users need to answer questions like:

“How much federal tax will be withheld by year-end based on current payroll?”

“How much discretionary money will I have available for a vacation after planned expenses?”

These are not edge cases—they are core personal finance planning needs.

Impact of Not Having This Feature

Requires manual aggregation or external spreadsheets

Increases risk of tax underpayment penalties due to lack of visibility

Reduces trust in reports as a complete financial picture

Forces users to reconcile multiple tools (budget vs reports vs projections)

Makes Quicken less competitive as a forward-planning tool

Proposed Solution
Add a “Include Future Data” toggle in report customization with options such as:

Include scheduled transactions (within selected date range)

Include budgeted amounts by category

Option to include or exclude reminders not yet entered

Maintain clear distinction (e.g., flagged or labeled as projected vs actual)

Benefits

Enables true forecast reporting by category (including tax withholding)

Supports tax planning and compliance, helping users avoid penalties

Improves decision-making for discretionary spending (travel, large purchases, etc.)

Leverages existing Quicken data (no new data entry required)

Aligns reporting with how users actually plan finances—forward-looking, not just retrospective

Why This Should Be Prioritized
This feature builds directly on existing capabilities (scheduled transactions, budgets, reports) and connects them in a way users already expect. It would significantly enhance the practical value of Quicken for Mac for both everyday users and those managing more complex financial planning.

If this would improve your workflow, please consider upvoting so it gains visibility.

I know that Quicken removed support for using tags in budgets in QWin because of some challenges, and so this is also not available in QMac. BUT I believe there is a solution to addressing this that may help this feature be viable.

I presented the same solution (here) in the context of designing a Columnar Report like in QM2007 that was eventually added to Quicken Mac, allowing creating a report based on categories vs tags.

So please add this feature back for budgets.

Adding your VOTE for this feature is not voting for the solution but the feature only. If you like (or dislike) the proposed solution, add your comments below.

If you find this feature helpful, please be sure to click the dark gray arrow in the yellow box below this post to increase the count of this post and therefore its visibility to other users, and to the developers by seeking to have the features you need or desire end up in the latest version. Your VOTE matters!

--------------------

Proposed possible solution (refined from original recommendation):

Since transactions can have multiple tags, there is the possibility to get cross-tagging, which would result in double-counting. I believe the options are quite simple to deal with this. Let me present to you my suggestions:

Without having analyzed it completely, I can see only a few solutions to that challenge of designing and developing such a feature:

either the budget carries a warning that any transactions that have more than one tag and appear on the budget will be double counted, (not terribly useful but better than nothing)

or the program goes the extra step to warn the user if it found cross-tagged transactions that are being double-counted but nothing else (again, not great but better than nothing)

or even one step further, for any row where cross-tags are detected, those fields are highlighted (coloured, formatted, etc) to show where the double-counting is taking place; this would give the user a visual cue as to where approximately the cross-tagging exists.

or one step further, the user can be given the option to not display subtotal or total for those lines or columns; again enhancing the visual cue.

Whichever way, I cannot see any program knowing what to do beyond that; it would be up to the user to decide how best to handle that. In some cases, it may be as simple as the user choosing to not display subtotals and/or totals (QM2007 had the functionality to choose your columns, including which subtotals and totals to display in reports; the same could apply to budgets), or the user would have to decide if that cross-tagging makes sense for the transactions involved and clean it up.

Hello. I would like Quicken to create a way to classify an expense as either Fixed or Discretionary. This would happen in the Category Window. I can do this at the transaction level by using tags, but i would have to do this for every transaction. Being able to classify at the Category level would allow users to understand where they have some flexibility in spending their money. Fixed Expenses (things you have to pay - taxes, mortgage, etc.) vs where there is some discretion.

The user should be able to do the classification themselves. Of course, being able to include the classification field in reports would also be helpful.

Thank you....love the Mac version...i switched from Windows and have never looked back...

Hi: I was just wanting to suggest an improvement to the Quicken for Mac Software. In the "Edit Budget" screen (Where you can see the entire Budget for each month and the year) could you make it possible to have the ability to right click on a budget number so that it would open up a comment field. Then a person could put a short note/comment there. Most budget amounts are straight forward and are the same month to month. However, some have various items in them that are unique to a certain month, or for that year. This would help to be able to see what those particular anomalies are. Thanks.

Dear Q-Think Tank Crew,

I love Quicken and have been a loyal customer for more than 30 years. Good Job!

But, as things normally are, there has always been a little thing that I think could be improved. So pardon me while I stuggle to explain what that is…..

I religiously use the "Budget Bar Graph" to track my spending. It has a lot of nice features and I appreciate it. As I am sure you are aware, the set-up shows each category having a specific amount of "monthly spending allowance" represented by a horizontal bar that fills in with green as spending accumulates throughout the month. If spending exceeds the budget the bar turns red. That part is excellent as it alerts me to check my spending and note where the overages have occured. This is great!!!

But I think the bar graph's set up is lacking one crucial feature—each of the bars show how much has been spent relative to how much has been budgeted. As such, each budget catagory's bar is shown to have the same lenghth showing only the amount budeted vs the amount spent. Thus each catagory appears (graphically) to have the same value relative both to each other and to the budget as a whole.

But those are two different values… I think it would be much more accurate and useful to dispay each catagory's bar length in proportion to its value in total budget. For example: currently when my $19.00 Entertainment budget is overspent (say, by $1), the bar turns red. The same thing happens when my $275 Utility budget is exceeded (say, by $100). These are obviously different amounts that have different weights, but graphically they are displayed as having the same weight (represented by the bar's length) as each other.

The result is that when my Entertainment and Utilities are both over budget they both look like the same red sore thumbs on the graph even though Utilities is much more importantly overspent (in total cost) relative to Entertainment by a factor 100:1.

If the expense bars were scaled (by length) to reflect their relative value to the total budget it would be much easier to assess my spending at a glance. Right now, toward the end of the month, it ends up skewed to red due to overspending in very low value catagories.

And, of course the opposite applies to the green of the spending. I know I can adjust the budget to get rid of the red, but the bars would still appear to represent equal values.

What say you?

Daniel

The resulting display is too large and complex for me to comprehend so I normally go through and close them. This allows me to proceed from the simple to the comprehensive when I see a need to do so, i.e. if a category is "out of whack" I expand that category to find out why and I close it once I've resolved the issue.

And of course if you leave the budget to work on an account register when you return to budgeting again there expanded once more

I don't believe there is a setting which allows this.

It would really be great to see EVERYTHING in my Outlook or Apple Calendar include a shared/subscribed calendar that is my quicken budget calendar. For example: Perhaps you have an iPhone, you could have your personal local or iCloud calendar using your AppleID obviously, a work calendar by adding your work email account (and turning Calendar toggle on), a subscribed sports calendar, a subscribed music artist calendar, etc. THE BIG ONE THAT IS MISSING is my budget calendar. It would be awesome to see all my event plans & money plans all overlaid in one calendar view/list in my Apple iCalendar or even in an Outlook client on an iPhone or any other platform.

Of course some will not want to show everything in their calendar but, two main SHOW/DON'T SHOW toggles (on/off) could simply be for Expenses and Income. Turn either or both of them on or off to be shared/published to the Quicken calendar service that shares/publishes it out.

I'm sure there are other features and options that could be added but, it would just be nice to be able to have ONE calendar view to show everything in life. Not siloed calendars that you have to reconcile manually. For example: You spent $100 on 3/21/2025… your could easily see your went to the Dr.; or you have $200 left in budget for Utilities but, you see this months Electric bill is coming up and you can see it will be over the budgeted.. so you don't go to eat out for lunch a couple of days before to make it all work out. Same idea for seeing an ongoing budget tracking balance as the month goes, you can schedule flexible items based on when the budget might allow better, PLANNING everything with a budget in mind. It could really help to not overspend today when you see what is coming up on a calendar that is not necessarily a planned expense/bill or income; like a Dr. Appt. copay.

This would help with proactive planning of withdrawals and other spending decisions based on anticipated cash flow.

Here is a sample of a forecast for a group of specific rental properties:

Current Challenge:
Currently, Quicken allows only a single account selection profile at a time. This means I must manually reselect the same 4–5 accounts (from dozens) every time I want to review that particular forecast. There's no support for saving or reusing custom groupings of accounts, and multi-selection is not retained. Once I finish the review, I also have to manually reset everything to return to my general forecast view. This repeated manual process is error-prone and inefficient, especially with a large number of accounts.

Here’s a visual example showing just a portion of my account list—managing this without filtering or saved views becomes tedious.

Suggested Enhancement:
Please allow users to save named account selection sets for use in the Projected Balances view. This would enable:

Quickly switching between different forecast scenarios (e.g., rental properties, personal spending, investment accounts)

Reusing customized account groupings without repeating the selection process

Reducing manual errors and improving the forecasting workflow

FYI, I found there was no category for General Quick Feature. (I use Quicken on Mac)

[Moved to QMac section of the Community]

While I enjoy using Quicken, it seems to be lacking one very functional feature, envelope budgeting. For example if I budget $50 a month for clothing but don't use it, I would apply that amount to a category I have over spent on. I have seen this feature in other software for while you may over spend in one area, you may still underspend overall for that month. I have seen links here where people try to work around it. They are usually more complicated than they are worth. This should really be an integral feature to Quicken's budget section. I do realize it gives you your Net over/under and I find envelope budgeting much more helpful. Hopefully you can add this to a future update.

It would be very helpful if Quicken would show actual values for each budgeted item alongside the budgeted amount so adjustments could be to the budgeted amounts. If one has numerous items in the budget, it is time consuming to reconcile the budgeted amounts. This was a feature in the Windows version that I hope someday will come to the Mac version.

Currently, the scheduled transactions are not totaled in the future months of the budget. So, the amount +/ - on the left only takes into account YTD and so it is difficult to know how much each category truly has remaining without considering the scheduled transactions. Quicken for windows has this.

Somebody posted this as a question. I think it is important as I could accidentally use an incorrect and unbudgeted category and there is nothing to tell me.

In Quicken Windows, everything that isn't budgeted for the month goes into the "Everything Else" area.

In Quicken Mac, this is not an option. Either I budget for every single category/subcategory, or those discretionary expenditures don't get counted in the budget.

Could this be changed so that transactions to categories not budgeted are displayed and the budget added at that time or the category can be "ignored".

[2 Merged Votes]

A number of checking accounts require minimum account balances in order to avoid a service fee charged to the account.

It would be very helpful to have a warning in Quicken to help avoid bank fees.

The alert/warning could be simple (pop-up message, color-code, flag, etc.), triggered when the projected balance in an account dips below a configured minimum in the future. This would allow for proper steps to be taken (i.e. money transferred to the account) to avoid the fee ahead of that date.

For example, if I have a checking account where the minimum daily running balance required to avoid a monthly fee is $1,500, I would like Quicken to alert me when my projected balance dips below that amount. I can then set up a transfer from a savings account to ensure the checking account is properly funded to avoid actually dipping below the minimum balance and incurring a fee.

Budget printing capabilities are getting better but need more options. Right now the 12 month budget report can be rescaled to fit onto fewer pages, but it prints all the monthly budgets and actuals spent and doesn't include an annual summary. In QM2007, one could choose which months to print as well as an annual summary. Could we add those options back in?

When planning / budgeting it's very useful to know what your projected balances would be assuming your current budget and bill reminders are accurate.

Currently the Projected Balances report only includes amounts from Bill Reminders - this is not very useful because it excludes amounts that aren't a scheduled bill. Such as groceries, fuel and other expenses that do not fit the mold of a "Bill Reminder" that can be included in a budget.

Projected Balances need to include these budget amounts to accurately reflect where you will be in the future financially.

This is the #1 feature I used in MS Money had that was invaluable and Quicken has yet to include in their product.

I like to export the budget as a summary variance report each month. Unfortunately, if I do not do it on the exact last day of the month, the budget date changes to the next month and I cannot export the previous month's variance data.

I suggest that there be a customizing feature added to the budget spreadsheet that will permit a change to the date range of the budget month. I am using Quicken 2017 for Mac so I do not know if this applies to Windows.
