What's the difference - and why are two registers needed unless they're different ?

The one labeled Cash (which I presume in in bold type) is a group register. If you had more than one checking account or any additional cash accounts, they would be listed under the Cash heading and the Cash register would allow you view a combined register of all of the cash/checking accounts.
Since you have only one checking/cash account, it appears to be a duplicate. If you hover over the Cash label, you will see a triangle appear on the left. Clicking this will collapse the cash group register, hiding the checking account. If you like, you can leave it this way and do most of your work at this level (except certain things like reconcile).Quicken Mac Subscription; Quicken Mac user since the early 90s5
