If this purchase is for a newly added security, please check your Tools menu / Security List. Locate the entry for this security and make sure that the
Security Type
= Stock, Mutual Fund or anything else but "Market Index" (the latter is reserved for things like the Dow Jones Index, NASDAQ, etc. and won't work with a real stock, fund, etc.)
In the Portfolio View, click Customize. Go to the Securities tab and checkmark all the securities you want to see in this particular view. Newly added securities may not automatically be added to the list.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. Customizing the Portfolio view to add trhe stock did the trick.
