Not sure why this was split from the other topic - but I'll re-post my reply ....
WAS there ever an existing data file password that you created for the Quicken data file -
or - did the password prompt appear after a recent Quicken update ?
There was a reported bug awhile ago -
where a bogus prompt for the data file password was being generated
AND the Forgot Password did nothing -
I believe the only fix was the classical "Restore from recent backup"

HELP! I have a similar issue. I entered a lot of data into Quicken (Windows) earlier today, and the file does not have a password. Now I am trying to open it, and it's asking for a password. I tried to restore from a recent backup file, and it is also requiring a password. The "Forgot Password" link does nothing when I click on it. I need to get this datafile open to work on my taxes! Help please!

I'm merely copying my previous posting from above -
First - WAS there ever an existing data file password that you created for the Quicken data file -
or - did the password prompt appear after a recent Quicken update ?
There was a reported bug awhile ago - that seems to randomly pop up -
where a bogus prompt for the data file password is being generated
AND the Forgot Password link does nothing -
I believe the only fix was the classical "Restore from recent backup"-
AND adding a Data File Password to potentially help deter future situations.
