There have been several threads today on this error. I am not familiar with the 1706 error but I found some information via Copilot. Some of the resolution suggestions may not apply, but other ones might be worth a try -

To resolve Error 1706, follow these steps:

    1. Repair the Program:
      • Go to the Control Panel on your computer.
      • Look for the program that is causing the error.
      • Right-click on it and choose Repair.
      • Follow the prompts to complete the repair process.
    2. Check the Installation Source:
      • The error occurs when the original installer package is missing or inaccessible.
      • Locate the installation source (usually a CD, DVD, or downloaded setup file).
      • Make sure it’s available and accessible.
      • If you downloaded the program, try redownloading it and reinstalling.
    3. Clean Up Temporary Files:
      • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
      • Type %temp% and press Enter.
      • Delete all files and folders in the Temp directory.
      • Restart your computer.
    4. Update Windows:
      • Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date.
      • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
      • Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
    5. Check for Registry Issues:
      • Use a reliable registry cleaner tool to scan for and fix any registry issues.
      • Be cautious when editing the registry; create a backup before making any changes.
    6. Reinstall the Program:
      • If none of the above steps work, uninstall the program causing the error.
      • Download the latest version from the official website and reinstall it.

I have also read that the 1706 error is not a software specific issue, but an issue that involves the Windows installer.
