BOA Checking account register balance is incorrect.

At the beginning of this week, I synced Quicken with BOA and all was well. Since then, the account balance in that account's register became incorrect - $18K too high. I reconciled the account with a BOA statement on June 25 and the balance was correct for that date and back through the history of the account.

Now, I can look back through the account register and the balance is wrong back more than 5 years. I tried running reports to see if somehow a single erroneous transaction was the cause and the see if somehow parts of the account register had been duplicated but could find nothing, going back to the start of the account in the year 2000. I ran a report looking for all the deposits including all dates but it appears normal, too.

I restored a backup from last week. It shows the same incorrect register balance,

I assume this is some kind of an environment problem with just this account.

Any ideas?

Have you had to deactivate and reactivate or reset your bank account?
If so, the reactivation process may have mistakenly changed your account register's Opening Balance transaction.
Please review the transaction amount and verify that it still is correct. Or might it be off by exactly the amount of the reported imbalance?
If there is a discrepancy, edit the Opening Balance transaction and change the amount. Also make a note of the correct amount in the Memo field, in case it gets messed up again.

Thanks for the idea. I did alter the opening balance which was around $4k to minus $18K, the amount of the discrepancy. Then, the whole account would not function. I could barely use the slide bar on the right to move backward up the register. I suspect that the reason for that was the number of times when the balance when negative..

Just guessing, it looks like the first few years of the account register are accurate with the original opening balance. It was more than 20 years ago so it is hard to know for sure. I've scanned up and down, looking for one or two transactions that make the balance wrong. I've tried filtering the register to only deposits and scanning that way. No luck so far.

Another thing that I noted was that when I changed the opening balance the exact amount of the discrepancy that I have with the bank - I got my new statement today, the account still did not balance with the bank. It is as though there were a calculation along the way that is throwing the balance off. I may try putting an adjustment balance in back just a few years and see what that does.
