Duplicate "broken" transfers

I'm sure this has been mentioned before (just can't seem to find it) but is there a workaround for what I'd call "duplicate broken transfers"?
Example. You have a transfer between two accounts, you then download from your bank or credit union (I have to do manual downloads with my credit union). If they don't auto match to your existing transfer then you get two new entries. Sometimes they themselves are a transfer sometimes not. If they ARE (or if one is) when you "match it" to the existing transfer it "breaks" the link and duplicates the transfer in the other account (WHY?) sometimes it doesn't even put it in the right account so when you rectify that it then duplicates.
So now you have a dead transfer in one of the accounts. And sure you can delete this but if it was a complex transfer with a split payment to deduct interest that is annoying. Why does Quicken do this? I want Quicken to match to my existing transfers but I don't want it to create transfers. I have Transfer Detection OFF.
This and the "Do you want to save the last transaction?" infinite death loop when I close the app are my two biggest pet peeves with this Software. The latter I've just accepted as never getting fixed, but this transfer thing shouldn't be too hard. Just don't make them!

Have you ever tried enabling Transfer Detection? It works well for me.
