My Macbook Pro hard drive died. My most recent data is saved in a data file with a dot-quicken extension "[name of file].quicken". I cannot open it. Does anyone know how to open it in quicken for mac? Thanks!

.quicken is the file extension Quicken Mac uses for it's data file. You need to make sure you're using the most recent version of Quicken Mac, though - the file format changes periodically and older versions of the software might not be able to open the file if it was saved from a newer version. Select "Check for Updates" from the Quicken menu, or log into your account at Quicken.com and download the installer for the current version, and see if that lets you open the file.

If Quicken isn't opening the file automatically when you start it then go to the File menu and select "Open", then navigate to where your .quicken file is stored, select it, and click the "Open" button. Or you can right click on the .quicken file, select "Open With" and select Quicken from the list of applications. If Quicken isn't in the list then select "Other" and navigate to where the Quicken app is installed, select it, and click the "Open" button.

Also, Quicken Windows won't be able to open a Quicken Mac file, you have to use Quicken Mac.

Thanks, Jon, for your answer and trying to help.

I tried to open the file in both the old Classic for Mac v7 and a new Classic Premier v8 I just bought. Neither worked. I get a message saying the document could not be opened. "An unexpected error occurred while decrypting the file." I get this for EVERY .quicken file I saved and try to open.

On the error message it also says the file was last opened by Quicken 7.10.1 (Build 710.55389.100) so I deleted the new quicken for mac premier 8.0.1 (most recent version, downloaded from Quicken.com today, and confirmed with check-for-updates) and downloaded that older version, and file still didn't open.

I also tried going to file/open, it saw file, I entered the password, and still got the same error message about decrypting the file. I report the problem to the development team each time. No answer yet.
