Credit Card Transaction all going to Misc. Category

Just in the past two weeks I noticed every single credit card transaction I have downloaded in getting automatically categorized as Misc. This is for transaction I repetitively have and are in the Memorized Payee List with proper categories assigned.

The problems all seem to be mostly related to various VISA credit cards, and I am beginning to think part of the issue is many of the VISA transactions now are including a dummy transaction number after the Payee name (e.g. "xxxxxxxxx5617". I would haver thought give note name of the Payee is still the same as that in the Memorized Payee List that this would not be the issue. And I am not sure this is in fact the issue.

Any one else experiencing similar issues lately, and if so, how di you solve it?

In that case you may need to add Renaming Rules to translate your Payee Names from the downloaded name to the desired "clean" Payee Name as it exists in your Memorized Payee List.

If you are automatically accepting downloaded transactions into your credit card registers, you should, at least for a while, turn off auto-accept and manually review and change Payee Names as you record new register transactions from downloaded transactions. Quicken will help build new Renaming Rules the first time and use the rule next time the same payee comes around.

Of course, if you already have Payee Names in your registers that need cleaning up, you will need to do so.
Edit / Find/Replace can be used to find, select and replace payee names with the desired names.

Thanks….all these payee names as I said are in the Memorized Payee List and have 1 to 4 categories, yet when Quicken downloads them they go to Misc.

@jcoley2 It looks like there were some changes or updates made to the Renaming Rules in Quicken. I am not sure if this is causing your issue. Also, the Misc category is probably a default from your credit card company.

@jcoley2 if you click on "?" (lower left) on the Edit→Preferences→Downloaded transactions screen, you can find some detailed information on how Quicken assigns categories for downloaded transactions, including the hierarchy used. I tried pasting a link for it here, but it didn't work.

The highlighted items are links you can click into.

@jcoley2 - I was more directing you to the information contained in the links. Sometimes Memorized Payees and Renaming Rules get complicated with the different settings available. The links contained some useful information on how they work together.
