download error Morgan Stanley Wealth

Quicken Premier R63.21 on Windows 11.
Investment download error. I have several investment accounts with one broker. Recently established an additional account. Cash in that account was used to create a managed account (not a mutual fund) which purchased 64 different stocks. Yesterday after the confirmations appeared in my brokerage account, I did a Quicken download which showed purchases of 64 securities but it shows one security, symbol AEPFX which is not in the brokerage account and Quicken is missing one security, symbol AXP which actually is in the brokerage account. The differences in the market values of these two stock holdings is exactly equal to the difference between Quicken’s sum total value and the brokerage’s online the sum total value of the securities. How do I correct this to delete the erroneous stock and add the correct one?

I suspect you mistakenly accepted a "match" in the download process (AEXP is the same as AXP) that wasn't actually a match to the security. Go to the erroneous security (AEXP) in Security Details>Edit Details and uncheck the box labeled "matched with online security" near bottom left of the window. Click Okay. Then run an OSU. AXP should get downloaded as a held security.

Check the register to see if the Buy transaction was auto corrected. If not manually change it to AXP. You should be good in future downloads. You can use Online Center to check if MS reported holdings match Quicken reported holdings.

Thanks, but, in the initial download I did not accept a match - all 64 were indicated as "no - add security." Before getting your helpful reply, I did a few manual download updates to see if Quicken would show me a place holder for the mismatches - it did not. Then I bit the bullet and used the help topics for "adding a security without using cash" and removing a security without selling. " Eventually I got my online account to match up with the Quicken investment register. I cannot figure out why or how Quicken screwed up the initial download. If this becomes a recurring problem with updates ( I will run download / update again after Monday's market closing), please tell me what you mean by "run an OSU update." Not familiar with that term. Thanks for the quick response anyhow.

    One Step Update- OSU

Using Add/Remove is a band-aid but not a resolution. You need to go to the register in the account where the 64 equities were initially downloaded. Then find the erroneous "Buy" transaction and change the security bought from AEXP to AXP. That should resolve the issue unless AEXP and AXP are still linked together. In which case you need to unlink them.

Many thanks. two things. Actually I did find that there was an erroneously matched security and I "unmatched" it.

I also went to this new account and found the original buy transactions and changed AEXP it to the proper ticker AXP and stock name.

That new account still shows holdings and values that match with my online brokerage account But now in the older account (IRA) where the same AEXP security has been held for years, it shows the proper number of shares of the AEXP security but the quote price shown is for the AXP security with the result that total market value is way overstated. Running OSU does not fix this. Where to next?

more . . . and now Aexp shows up again in the new account with a minus sign in from of the number of shares and the incorrect per share value so now the total value of this account is again off from the online brokerage amounts. . I am greatly confused.l

Uncheck "matched with online security" in Security Details for both AEXP and AXP. Check the Price History for both holdings and delete any erroneous pricing from the wrong holding.

Go to the account registers and delete the recent Remove/Add transactions you used, if you have not already done that. Verify that the correct holdings are shown in the recent Buy and Sell transactions. Verify the number of holdings and pricing matches brokerage amounts for both accounts.

If you have Mobile Sync turned on, turn it off temporarily and run OSU. If you get correct values in both accounts, you can turn it back on.

Following your advice, I have deleted the remove / add transactions from the new account.
I verified in the new account transactions that the buy of AXP is correct for all columns. The previous erroneous entry for AEXP in the new account does not appear at all in this account now.
In the new account, the price history for AXP appears to be correct compared to the brokerage online. The number of holdings and pricing for AXP in Quicken matches that in the brokerage.
The total value of this new account in Quicken now again matches the online brokerage account. All good there now, BUT

But in the old IRA account it shows for AEXP the correct number of shares, but it still uses the share price for AXP. The Quicken pricing history graph under details, at the bottom agrees with pricing in the brokerage account however. And this security was unmatched earlier today. The transaction history in Quicken now shows the most recent entry to be June 10. Which agrees with the online brokerage account. OSU again does not change this incorrect data in the old IRA account for this one security. So I still have incorrect price and total value for AEXP way ,way off, even though the number of shares shown is correct. Which means the total values of the IRA account is way off.

There's more. After the above post I went back again to the AEXP security in the IRA. Even though the security pricing at the bottom of the graph was OK, I then saw in the box to the left the "Quote" field, opened it and deleted the last pricing history which was incorrect. Now, fingers crossed, I think I am ok as the total values seem to match. I hope tomorrow's OSU preserves what I have fixed with you help. Many thanks again. You have been very patient and responsive.

    Maybe I spoke too soon
I was running a one step update for my VISA account only and got a popup prompt about security matching, something like “your brokerage reported:
American Euro PA F2 (AEPFX) does it match:
    America Euro Pac F2 (AEPFX)
or Amer Euro Pac GRWF2 (AEPFX)
I did not how to respond so I did not do either choice: Yes to identify either suggested security, nor did I say No - add this security. I simply closed out the screen. Values for the account remain. In brokerage account with MS this is actually American Funds EuroPac Fund Class F-2, abbreviated in that brokerage online display as American EuroPac F2.

I then I did a external drive backup, closed Quicken, reopened then ran separate updates in separate steps series for credit card accounts, and then updated this brokerage investment account and go no prompts at all. No data changed. By the way, I cannot do a One Step Update for Morgan Stanley, instead I have to first go to “update settings” and verify that it is still set for this brokerage account and pricing on other brokerage accounts and then do “update now.”

In Quicken this mutual fund showed as . . .GRWF2 on the register list but in “details” it shows as American EuroPac F2 . So I tried to edit the security details in this view by doing the ticker symbol lookup and selected what was available on the drop down: American Funds EuroPac Fund Class F-2. But Quicken would not allow that and prompted me that I already have a security by that name so I shortened it to American EURO PAC F2, and Quicken accepted it..
I ran update again for this brokerage account . No matching prompts. Same values. I am concerned that at some point in the future I will get another “security matching” prompt. If so, how do I respond? “Yes it’s the same as one pf the two choices for AEFPX and if so, which one? Or No, add this security? I assume I should not add it at the risk of doubling up amounts

Quicken stores securities by the symbol. I suspect you have more securities cross-linked that need to be unmatched. You should go to Tools>Security List and look at the 3 securities you have mentioned. Start with the one that has GRWF2 listed in the Symbol field of Security Details.

Click Edit Details and verify the Symbol field is correct. Then click the Lookup button and select the name and symbol combination that represents security. The name does not need to match exactly what the brokerage calls it but it needs to be close and not obviously a different security. Do that for all of the 3 you have mentioned.

FYI, you can see/edit the price history table under the "More" menu option in Security Details. Next time OSU prompts you to match, pay attention to the Symbol and match them.

Adding- I think you are being confused by the various names that can be associated with a holding, particularly when abbreviations are used. You should concentrate on the SYMBOL in Quicken to define your holdings. Only one name can be associated with the symbol unless you link them during the "Are they the same" window prompts. Even then you will only see one symbol and one name in Security List but there will a hidden linkage you can't see except in Online Center Holdings if you click on the holding.

Focus on getting the symbols correct for each account holding and forget about/decide on one name to use for each symbol that somewhat matches what your brokerage name is. Use the Edit Price History to delete any erroneous pricing data. AXP is American Express and AEXP is the mutual fund.

I could not find a security with the symbol GRWF2 listed on any exchange. There is a GRW so if you really have or have once held that security, you should correct the symbol in Security Details, otherwise delete it.

Thanks. I should not have used my shorthand of “. . . GRWF2" as part of the full name which actually appeared as “American Euro Pacific Fund GRWF2" with symbol AEPFX. I was surprised by the match prompt because it used the same symbol for the downloaded one as well as the two offered matches and I knew that Quicken uses just the symbol for this purpose.

I had previously gone through the edit details of the security but only by clicking on the security in the investment register. Today instead I went to tools > Security list > with the following results:

I do not now see American Euro or similar with a name ending of GRWF2.

I do find three American Euro similar entries in the overall securities list and going from the name in the securities list to the edit details and lookups for the real names:

    1. “American EUROPAC F2 (AEPFX)” is American Funds EUPAC Class F-2 (AEPFX) (no CUSIP) (Not matched). transaction history entries from 5/7/21 to 6/10/25. Shows correct share balance and values compared to my brokerage account.
    2. “American Funds EUPAC Fund Class F2 AEPFX” is also American Funds EUPAC Class F-2 (AEPFX). It shows no transaction history and no shares or values.
    3. “American Fund Euro Pacific R2 (RERBX” (no CUSIP) (WAS MATCHED but cannot tell with which other one. I unmatched it. ) is American EUPAC Fund Class R2. This one does not match what currently shows on my current brokerage account but it shows transaction history all the way from 1/11/2008 to 5/2/21, shows cost basis and now shows no current shares or values.

All three are designated for download. Number 1 above seems to more closely match what is shown on my brokerage online: American EUPAC F2 (AEPFX) but apparently does not have complete history.

Possible complicated explanation: All securities in my IRA were originally in a 401k which I rolled over to my current IRA after I retired. This may account for security class designation and different transaction dates .

The only American Euro - like listing in Online Center Holdings in this IRA account is:
American EUPAC F2 AEPFX . Clicking on that one does not reveal any linkage.

The listing in Online Center Holdings for my new TOD account properly shows American Express with its symbol. It does not how any spurious holdings. This new account is not a mutual fund but a managed portfolio that holds individual stocks, including American Express and many others.

So back to my problematic IRA account, considering security 1 above to be the one most closely aligned CURRENTLY with my actual holding, should I:
disable / uncheck the download / quote box for securities 2 and 3 above?
    Should I delete security 2?
I initially thought of deleting security 3 but if in fact it was part of my old 401k and has basis info (even though irrelevant for tax purposes) I assume deletion of the transaction history from years 2008 to 2021 would create problems.

I dare not command Quicken to download my Morgan Stanley transaction and quotes until I get this right.
Anxiously awaiting your expertise and advice on how to proceed. With thanks again.

    Delete Security 2.

Leave Security 3 as is. It appears to be a legit past holding which was sold.

    Leave Security 1 as is.

Download from MS. You will get prompted to match to Security 1. Make sure the symbols match each other and accept the match.

You should be good from here on out. If at some point Security 3 is ever purchased again, it will ask for a match. If the symbols match, accept it.

All done — many thanks. FYI my broker confirms that the different symbols for the same security with slightly different name endings did arise from different classifications when rolled over from 402k to IRA
